Steel (玉鋼 or タマガネ, Tamagane?), also known as Gemsteel and Tama-Hagane, is a recurring item in the series. It is mainly used in the crafting of equipment.

XII Gemsteel is a loot that can be dropped from Lv.99 Red Chocobo, as a Clan Reward from Montblanc for acquiring eight Espers, or by creating it in the Bazaar by using Damascus Steel x2, Hell-Gate's Flame x2, and Scarletite. Two are required in making the Masamune, while three are required in making the Tournesol. It sells for 150 gil.

Gemsteel is a loot that can be obtained from completing the missions "Mountain Watch", "Wanted: Sky Pirate Vaan", and "Wanted: Artillery". It is required in making the Onion Sword, Harpe, Manganese Saber, Luabreaker, Ame no Murakumo, Artemis Bow, Perseus Bow, Greataxe, Golden Axe, Aegis Shield, Mirage Vest, and Bone Armlets. It sells for 1,200 gil.
