FFT Gil Taking

A Thief stealing Gil from an enemy in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Pilfer gil from the target.

Steal Gil (ギルもぬすむ, Giru mo Nusumu?), also known as Pickpocket, Pilfer Gil, Mug Gil, Nab Gil, Hold-up, Gil Taking, and Steal: Gil, is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series. It is often used in conjunction with the Steal command, and allows the user to steal gil as well as items.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy VI[]

Enemies are not programmed to steal items, so they steal gil instead. Within their AI script, these commands are called Steal and Mug because they are the same battle commands as Locke's. When Steal is used by a monster, it will try to take gil with a chance of failure. Mug, when used by monsters, deals damage and steals gil.

If the player tries to steal from Harvesters, Punishers, Mugbears, and Dadaluma, they will counter by stealing the party's gil with either Steal or Mug. Luckily, the party can retake their lost gil by defeating the enemies that stole their gil. If the player has a gil multiplier in effect with Cat-ear Hood or the in-game cheat in Pixel Remaster, they get more money back than was stolen, allowing for gil-farming.

The amount of gil stolen is as follows:

Final Fantasy VII[]

Hold-up is an ability available to the Bandit. After casting the ability, he steals 340 gil, and if left to live long enough, he will escape on one of his succeeding turns. If the player kills the Bandit before he flees, they will get their money back, but if the Bandit manages to flee, the money will be lost.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Steal Gil is a support ability to Zidane. It is learned for 40 AP from the Glass Armlet and Yellow Scarf, and requires 5 Magic Stones to equip.

The amount of gil stolen is a random amount up to the quarter of Zidane and the target's level multiplied.

Final Fantasy X[]

Pilfer Gil is a Special ability exclusive to the International, PAL, and HD Remaster versions that allows the user to steal gil from an enemy. Also exclusive is the Nab Gil Skill, which allows the user to inflict damage while stealing gil, similar to the ability Mug. Enemies can be stolen from multiple times, but the ability's success rate is halved after every successful steal, and the amount of gil stolen also gradually decreases. The amount that can be stolen is generally small, but varies between enemies; human enemies and bosses tend to hold more gil than regular fiends.

The Pilfer Gil ability is located in Rikku's section of the standard and expert Sphere Grids, while the Nab Gil ability is located in Lulu's standard and Rikku's expert Sphere Grids.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Steal gil and damage one enemy.

"Help" description

Pilfer Gil is an ability exclusive to the Thief dressphere, and requires 30 AP to master and costs 2 MP to use. Nab Gil can be accessed by equipping the Garment Grid Horn of Plenty. The amount of gil that can be stolen varies between enemies with regular random encounters usually not possessing much and bosses carrying the most.

If the player intends to pay off O'aka XXIII's debt before the end of Chapter 3, Pilfer Gil can be of great help. Angra Mainyu is a useful enemy in this regard, as it may appear whenever the party is digging around Bikanel, and the party can steal a large sum of gil from it every time it is encountered.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

Steal Gil is an ability learned by the Thief class, and steals gil from an enemy directly next to the thief. It costs 10 JP to master. A similar ability, Plunder Gil, is an ability of the Sky Pirate, which is automatically mastered. The amount of Gil stolen is equal to the character's Level x Speed.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

Steal: Gil is an ability learned from the Thief class, and it can be learned for 100 AP from the Jack Knife. Steal Gil steals a predicted amount of gil equal to the caster's Max HP.

The actual amount of gil stolen varies as such:

Mug is a Soldier ability that does normal damage and steals a small amount of gil, and can be learned from the Diamond Sword for 300 AP.

The formula for how much gil is stolen is as follows:

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

Steal Gil is an ability learned by the Thief class 200 AP from the Jackknife. The Soldier class has the Mug Gil ability, which steals gil while damaging the enemy at the same time, and is learned for 350 AP from the Diamond Sword.

Pickpocket is a similar ability learned by Vikings the Iron Hammer for 250 AP. Snipers learn the ability Wallet Shot from the Hunting Bow which enables them to steal gil from a distance.
