The party first goes to Spelvia after Queen Arbor tells Brandt and Aire the hero Rolan may have a cure to save Horne. Using the Transformation Staff, Brandt and Aire transform into their animal forms and attempt to jump to Spelvia from the Great Tree. Aire jumps and lands safely in the city, but Brandt falls off.
Aire wanders into the Spelvia Dungeons and is reunited with Yunita, who traveled there from Urbeth using the Rainbow Boots. They team up and leave the dungeons, but find the town in turmoil, with the golem caretakers attacking humans on sight. The two find out Rolan has isolated himself from the world, having decided that all humans are hateful and selfish creatures.
The Witch of the Sky allows them to enter Rolan's Soul to find a way to return Rolan to normal. After defeating the monsters Geri and Freki, the darkness within Rolan is released and covers the city. When returning to Spelvia, Aire and Yunita are reunited with Brandt and Jusqua. The party arrives in Rolan's chamber and defeats him in battle. After defeating Rolan, Rekoteh arrives and holds onto her brother. After Rolan's defeat, the party realizes they have released Chaos and caused darkness to spread throughout the world, breaking time as well. The Witch of the Sky tells them to collect the legendary weapons of light in order to undo the damage.
After the party is sent back in time, the group returns to Spelvia. At this time, Rolan is training in the Spelvia dungeons, burdened with his task of saving the world, lonely, and bitter. After speaking to him, the party travels into Rolan's Soul again. After defeating several Arch Demons, the party fights Lucifer in the central chamber and stops him from corrupting Rolan. After defeating Lucifer, Rolan gives the party the Sword of Light.
After Chaos opens the portal to the Star Chamber, Brandt and the others go to Spelvia and meet with Rolan and Rekoteh. Rolan tells the party he will deal with the monsters while Brandt's group go to the Star Cavern and defeat Chaos. At the end of their journey the party goes to Spelvia and returns the Sword of Light to Rolan.
Due to the darkness in Rolan's heart, the Golems who operate his castle are set to attack any humans who approach them and refuse them service at the shops. To avoid this, the field character must be in animal form, by way of the Transform Staff, when speaking to a Golem. Alternately, Rolan may be placed at the head of the party. After the defeat of Lucifer, Rolan's darkness is purified and the characters are free to approach the Golems in their human forms.
"Heavenly Spelvia" (天空のスペルビア, Tenkuu no Superubia?) is the location theme for the city of Spelvia. There is also a "nighttime" (夜, Yoru?) version. After the town gets covered in darkness, the location theme for the city is changed to "Cursed Town" (呪われた町, Majinawareta Machi?). All three tracks can be found in the original soundtrack as Tracks 28, 29, and 30 respectively, and are composed by Naoshi Mizuta.
The katakana for Spelvia (スペルビア) can alternately be read as superbia, the Latin word for "pride" and one of the Seven Deadly Sins. This is befitting for Rolan when he is under darkness, as he develops a hatred for humans and regards himself and his floating kingdom as higher than everything else.
