Cloud inside the Sector 5 Reactor

The Sector 5 Reactor is one of the eight Mako Reactors built by the Shinra Electric Power Company to power the city of Midgar in Final Fantasy VII. In the original Final Fantasy VII its layout is exactly the same as the Sector 1 Reactor.

In the game Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, Zack Fair and his fellow SOLDIER, Sephiroth both enter the Reactor in search of the rogues, Genesis Rhapsodos and Dr. Hollander. Here they fight Sahagin-like monsters, but with a strange mutation - they have the face of their missing friend, Angeal Hewley.

Further investigation discovers that both Angeal and Genesis were parts of Project G, a bizarre experiment performed by Hollander to make a modern Ancient. But the experiment was a failure. Genesis had begun to degrade slowly, and could make copies of himself on humans.

Both Hollander and Genesis arrive at the same time. While Sephiroth deals with his old friend, Zack chases after Hollander. They chase throughout the Reactor, until they reach the very bottom of the plate. Though Zack has Hollander cornered, Angeal arrives. Angeal shows Zack that he is monster by sprouting a white wing, then attacks. Zack refuses to fight his old friend. The ground beneath Zack breaks from Angeal's attack, and Zack falls down into the slums below.

[edit] AVALANCHE Attacks

Five years later, the Reactor once again plays a role in the storyline, this time for Final Fantasy VII. Following their successful attack on the Sector 1 Reactor, the members of the eco-terrorist organization AVALANCHE hope to repeat their victory on the No. 5 Reactor. After climbing through the city's underground subway system, they manage to break into the Reactor.

At first all seems to go well. AVALANCHE fights its way down to the main generation and plant the explosives. However, on their way out, President Shinra himself greets the insurgents. Shinra had known of the attack beforehand, and so prepared the Reactor itself to be a trap for AVALANCHE.

The giant robot, Air Buster is sent in to defeat the terrorists, while President Shinra leaves, certain of victory. But it is destroyed instead. As it explodes, the ex-SOLDIER mercenary working for AVALANCHE, Cloud Strife, is caught in the blast which destroyed the walkway they are standing on. Cloud hangs on for dear life, but eventually his grip fails. Down he falls to his possible death, in the Slums below - like Zack had five years earlier. He survives the same way Zack did, by landing on Aeris' flower bed inside the church in the Sector 5 Slums.
