Harley, from Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, is a Scholar.

Scholar (学者, Gakusha?) is a recurring job in the Final Fantasy series. Experts in the theory of warfare, Scholars provide battlefield support and wear academic robes with mortar boards.

Like Red Mages, Scholars have access to both White and Black Magic, but with a far greater range of spells from which to choose—and often automatic access to sensory magic. The trade-off is a lack of offensive ability; unlike Red Mages, Scholars may not wield swords or daggers, and instead go into battle armed with books or grimoires. Notable Scholars include Harley from Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Gunther Schultz II from Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess, and Tyro from Final Fantasy Record Keeper. Typically, a Scholar wears an olive green coat and an academic hat, however nu mou Scholars wear purple robes with gold edges.

Final Fantasy IIIEdit

The Scholar job is granted to the party by the Fire Crystal. The Scholar has the ability to scan the enemy for weaknesses and can double the effects of healing items. In the 3D remakes, the ability Scan, also known as Study, additionally removes status enhancements on opponents.

Final Fantasy IV: The After YearsEdit

Harley makes an appearance as a Scholar-like class known as a Secretary. She has the abilities Piercing Sight and Gil Toss. Piercing Sight can give an enemy a new weakness and remove magic effects. Gil Toss does damage by throwing gil at all enemies based on Harley's level.

Harley also knows the following Band abilities:

  • Feast of the Land: Harley (Gil Toss) + Edward (Bardsong)
  • Wild Whip: Rydia (Attack, Whip) + Harley (Attack, Whip) + Izayoi (Attack, Whip)
  • Call Me Queen: Rydia (Attack, Whip) + Leonora (Attack, Whip) + Harley (Attack, Whip) + Izayoi (Attack, Whip)

Final Fantasy XIEdit

Scholar is a job class which is introduced in the Wings of the Goddess expansion. The Scholar class can cast both white and black magic, similar to the Red Mage job. Scholars have the exclusive ability to change weather conditions around the player, giving them and their allies various advantages for fights. The Grimoire can also be used by those of the Scholar class when they enter battle, and it grants them access to some additional spells.

Final Fantasy XIVEdit

FFXIV Scholar Icon Scholar is a Soul Crystal job and is similar to the Summoner. However, instead of focusing on damage and debuffing abilities, the Scholar travels alongside a Fairy familiar which assists him or her in casting defensive and enhancement based spells. The Scholar still has access to the Arcanist's offensive magic attacks, which does give them fairly significant damage capability (compared to both White Mages and healing roles in the series as a whole), but their primary focus is to keep the party safe with various protective and restoring buffs.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the RiftEdit

The Scholar class is a job exclusive to nu mou. They retain their trademark ability to scan opponents status and loot. The Scholar's offensive attacks are spells that target both the enemy and player's own parties.

He also gets White Wind, which heals his health and Food meters, and spells that improve the effects of potions or spellbooks.
