Master swordsmen whose keen reflexes allow them to intercept and deflect enemy attacks.

Description

The Samurai (, Samurai?) is a job in Final Fantasy V obtained after the Earth Crystal has shattered. The Samurai is a powerful job due to their use of katanas, which only they and the Freelancer can wield, due to the high critical hit rates found innately in katanas (the average being 12% critical). The flip-side is that katanas are not compatible with Spellblade. The Samurai has decent stats, and while it does have slightly lower Strength than the Knight and Berserker, it is still a fearsome force on the battlefield.

Mastering this job on the whole party earns the player the "Four Samurai" achievement in the mobile and Steam versions.

Appearance

Template:PseudoImageEach character wears traditional samurai armor. Lenna does not wear a helmet and Galuf's helmet does not have a tassel. Everyone wears red with gray except for Faris, who wears gray with blue, and Galuf who wears red with black and white. The sprites have been altered for the mobile/Steam remake, where Faris also forgoes wearing a helmet.

Abilities

  • Job command - Zeninage
  • Innate abilities - Shirahadori
  • Equipment - Knives, Katanas, Shields, Heavy Helmets, Clothes, Heavy Armor, Gauntlets

The Samurai is usually associated with the ability to throw money, and Final Fantasy V is no exception. The higher the level of the thrower, the more damage Zeninage does, and the more gil it consumes (temporary level boosts raise the damage done, but not the gil consumed). This command is one of the most powerful attacks, but frequent use usually isn't an option. Shirahadori increases the ability to dodge physical attacks by 25%.

Mineuchi will ignore an equipped weapon's special abilities or effects, and will not dispel Confuse, Sleep, or Control. Mineuchi will not add Paralyze despite the in-game message due to a bug.

Iainuki has 85% accuracy and takes into account the level factor that magic attacks use, and will never work against Heavy-types.

Equip Katanas gives characters the Samurai's base Strength unless otherwise at a higher value.

Upon mastery, Freelancers and Mimes gain the Samurai's base Strength, Agility and Stamina unless they already have a higher base from another mastered job. They also gain Shirahadori as an innate ability.

The base stats for Samurais are:

  • Strength: 43
  • Agility: 26
  • Stamina: 43
  • Magic: 12

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2015)

Template:Sideicon Since Bartz has a new moveset based on the classes in Final Fantasy V, he now has a move based on the Samurai job. Samurai is an HP attack and a charge move that starts off with Bartz charging up Zeninage, which has three levels of charge. Each level has increased range, damage and area of effect, and can potentially hit multiple opponents. If a Zeninage is successful, he finishes the attack with a wide slash with his katana.

When Bartz masters Samurai after landing it on opponents twice, his Zeninage charging time becomes faster.

Etymology

Samurai were the military nobility of medieval and early-modern Japan. They were not just great swordsmen, but also powerful horse archers and martial artists of other fields. Though their status was that above commoners, samurai were bound to forms of etiquette and a way of life known as Bushido, stressing honor to one's devoted and preparing oneself in the face of death.
