Its original debut was in the Japan-exclusive Squaresoft title, Bahamut Lagoon, as an initially Fire-elemental dragon, belonging to the main protagonist of a past, in which he bears the name Salamando. Capable of mastering every elemental property, his final transcendence can be either Holy or Dark Dragon.

Salamander is the rank 1 Fire Ranged summon. Its normal attack, Fireball, deals Fire damage to one foe.
Salamander first appears in Final Fantasy Tactics as a higher level Fire summon. He is learned for 820 Job Points, by the Summoner job class. Salamander performs Wyrmfire, a Fire-elemental attack on all enemies in range. It costs 48 MP to cast and has a speed of 12. Salamander has a 30% chance of randomly being learned in battle by a Summoner who has not yet learned it and is not KO'd by it, or absorbs at least 1 HP worth of damage. Nullifying the damage does not count.
Salamander from Final Fantasy Tactics appears in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game with a fire-elemental card.

Salamander is a common card captured in Berneside Plains. He is a Fire-elemental guardian, and takes the shadow form of a Beast.
Salamander is a mythological reptile believed to be able to breathe and resist fire. In legends, ancient alchemists are said to use Salamanders to determine the heat of the fire necessary to turn lead to gold.
