S-Mine (Ｓマイン, S Main?) is a recurring ability in the series. It is a strong non-elemental physical attack generally used by Dyne.

S-mine can be used by the player in the form of the S-Mine item, which inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to one target. It can be obtained by buying it for 1000 gil at Fort Condor, Costa del Sol, and Rocket Town after acquiring Highwind, for 3200 BP at the Battle Square in the Gold Saucer only on disc 1 after obtaining the Tiny Bronco, from stealing it from Attack Squad, or by winning it from Gun Carrier and Submarine Crew.

The German S-mine (Schrapnellmine, Springmine or Splittermine in German), also known as the "Bouncing Betty", is the best-known version of a class of mines known as bounding mines. When triggered, these mines launch into the air and then detonate at about 0.9 meters (3 ft). The explosion projects a lethal spray of shrapnel in all directions.
