Retribution

Retribution in Final Fantasy XI.

Retribution (レトリビューション, Retoribyūshon?) is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy XI[]

Retribution is a powerful staff weapon skill available to a variety of jobs. Unlike most weapon skills, which can be acquired simply by increasing the skill of the weapon through repeated use, players must complete the Blood and Glory quest from Shantotto in order to acquire Retribution. When Retribution is used, the character's staff will float above his or her head, and then fly through an enemy and back into the user's hands.

Stats[]

Blood and Glory[]

Doctor Shantotto has recruited you into her staff-wielding team for the coming contest. Practice your skills with the staff you have been given until you've reduced it to splinters. What lies ahead? Glory and honor? Or blood and broken bones...?

In-game description.

Upon attaining 230 staff skill, the player will be given a Pole of Trials and a Weapons Training Guide when they next talk to Shantotto. After acquiring 300 Weapon Skill points with the Pole of Trials (one point awarded for performing a weapon skill; additional points for closing a skillchain), the power of the Pole of Trials will be exhausted, and the player will lose the HP+10, MP+10, and Fire/Light elemental resistances from the staff.

At that point, the player returns to Shantotto and gives her the staff and training guide in return for a Map to the Annals of Truth, with instructions to travel to Ifrit's Cauldron and defeat the Notorious Monster skeleton named Cailleach Bheur. After defeating the skeleton, the player will discover the Annals of Truth. When the Annals of Truth are returned to Shantotto, she bestows the Retribution weapon skill, but does not allow the player to participate in the upcoming staff tournament mentioned in the quest description.

Dissidia Final Fantasy[]

Retribution is a Bravery attack used by Shantotto. Unlike in its original appearance, Retribution is available from level 1, most likely because it is being used by Shantotto, who teaches it to player characters in Final Fantasy XI, and would therefore be more comfortable with the technique.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

Retribution returns as one of Shantotto's brave attacks, and can stagger an opponent if it is blocked. It costs 30 CP to equip and 100 AP to master.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2015)[]

As opposed to the PSP games, where Retribution is a Bravery attack, it is now the initial HP attack learned by Shantotto in the Arcade games. Its function is almost identical otherwise.
