Template:Type0 Character
A new Class Zero cadet. Machina's childhood friend. Excels in magic. Respectable, kind, and serious-natured.
Online description[1]
Rem Tokimiya is a playable character in Final Fantasy Type-0. She is a newly added member of Class Zero who wields twin daggers. Due to being a recent addition to the ranks of Class Zero, she doesn't have a number.
Profile
Appearance
Rem is a seventeen-year-old girl with shoulder-length brown hair and red eyes. She wears the uniform of Akademeia, which consists of a black jacket with gold shoulder pads and white-laced cuffs, a red plaid skirt hemmed with black lace and the red mantle of Class Zero. She wears black thigh-high socks and Mary Jane shoes. Rem wears pink frilled panties with a ribbon on the front. Her summer uniform has a black vest over a white blouse, a black plaid skirt with two interlocking belts and a small bow, and Class Zero's red mantle. She wears a pair of black gloves and white socks. Her formal uniform has a red jacket with black shoulder pads and cuffs, a black pleated skirt hemmed with white lace, and a white mantle. She wears a pair of white gloves, and her socks are red.
Personality
This well-mannered and kind-hearted girl recently transferred into Class Zero from Class Seventh. Rem is a terrible liar—even though she insists otherwise: try as she may, she is absolutely unable to fool her closest friends. Friends since childhood, she and Machina maintain a playful academic rivalry. (To date, she has outperformed him on all written exams.)
Rem is moral, kind and honest, and has an outstanding talent for magic. Mature and rational, she serves as a pillar of support and calming factor for her childhood friend Machina, trying to be cheerful, encouraging, and level-headed, even through tough times. She is emotionally resilient, loyal, and considerate of her friends' feelings, striving to hide her own pain to not burden her classmates. Rem cares for Machina, and looks out for him. As childhood friends, they work well together and understand each other better than anyone else.

Final Fantasy Type-0: Change the World
-The Answer-
During the Capital Liberation campaign Ace, Queen and Nine of the secretive Class Zero meet Machina and Rem, Agito Cadets of other classes of Akademeia, whom they tell to leave since they cannot use magic while under the effect of the empire's crystal jammer. The crystal jammer explodes, but before they can confirm its operator, the White Tiger Secundus l'Cie Qun'mi Tru'e, is dead, she escapes.
Class Zero is officially enrolled in Akademeia, the magic academy of the nation of Rubrum, with Machina and Rem transferred to it as its newest recruits. After introductions Machina and Rem offer to take the others on a tour around Akademeia, to which only Ace agrees to come along. Ace regrets not being able to come earlier to save more people during the liberation, but Machina and Rem tell him that since they faced a l'Cie, it's understandable.
They are briefed to take back four Rubrum cities occupied by Milites. Ace is assigned in a team with Machina and Rem, and is taken aback by commander Kurasame's decision, since he has never operated separately from his other eleven classmates before, all of whom, unlike Machina and Rem, are Arecia's adoptive children, feeling Machina and Rem are different from those raised in the External Bureau. As they topple enemies, Ace recognizes Machina and Rem's abilities, changing his mind about them. They encounter Militesi General Qator Bashtar who challenges them on his MA, Gabriel, but he is forced to retreat and McTighe is liberated.
As the three sit down at the city square among the celebrating soldiers and civilians, Ace admits it was his fault Machina's brother Izana died during Capital Liberation, but Machina and Rem are dumbfounded. Two months later Rubrum regains control of much land area previously occupied by Milites.
The cadets are sent to sabotage a Militesi magitek factory during which a ceasefire is called and the cadets are given leave in the Militesi capital of Ingram. Queen Andoria of the Kingdom of Concordia is assassinated and Class Zero realizes they are framed as scapegoats and try to contact Kurasame to no avail. The cadets escape and Machina is later woken up by Rem, who says they are on the outskirts of Militesi territory. Rem finds the rest of Class Zero and asks if they feel bitter for fighting and training all their lives, and yet the Rubrum higher-ups never reward them. Ace doesn't feel bitter and claims to enjoy it, and the others agree. Machina and Rem are hurt by their answer, feeling the cadets never knew other lifestyles exist, and resolve to help them.
-The Penultimate Truth-
After a COMM from Kurasame the cadets are met by an airship and return to Akademeia. Half a month after the battle where the Knights of the Round Verboten Eidolon were summoned by Kurasame who had become a l'Cie, the fourteen members of Class Zero sit surrounding a bonfire, contemplating how far they've come and grown. Machina and Rem know that Ace, who used to say "cut off the past to move forward", would sometimes visit Izana's grave. Rem asks what their ambitions are after graduating. They hesitate, realizing they can't forever stay in Class Zero.
The next day, the class is divided into four teams: three to destroy three crystal jammers on three different sides of the government building, and one involving Machina, Rem and Ace to cut through into the building the moment the jammers are destroyed.
They encounter Qator on his MA Gabriel, who is defeated with the help of the other three teams. Inside the building, they face Marshal Cid Aulstyne of the empire. Cid tells the cadets their goal of creating a peaceful world is futile as the memory erosion makes it impossible for people to learn from the past. Rem says that if the Crystals are the root of evil, they will destroy them. Satisfied, Cid feels his ambitions will be achieved even if Class Zero would be the one claiming victory, and takes his own life.
As Tempus Finis commences, Rem becomes the Judge who is to make the Final Decision on the world's fate. Class Zero realizes they might have to become Agito by means of felling her. They venture to Pandæmonium that appears at the point of Tempus Finis, convincing themselves they are not felling Rem, but releasing her.
In Pandæmonium Rem sends the Rursan Reavers at the cadets. Machina harvests phantoma from the first one they fell, but the next four they bring down are revived before their eyes. Rem reminds them they have come to the temple independent of Arecia, and thus cannot be revived. After a harsh battle the Rursus finally lay still.
After Queen's death the path to the Judge is clear, but everyone is weakened from the battle. Rem brings down everyone but Ace and Machina with her magic. Ace, knowing he can't hold out much longer, tells Machina to absorb all of their phantoma to give him enough power to defeat Rem. As Ace dies, Machina harvests their phantoma before the last of his memories of Ace and their conversation disappear.

Seriously, though. I can't believe Class Zero is real! My friends and I were talking about categorizing you guys into an 'urban legend' from next year.
Rem upon meeting Class Zero
When she was little Rem contracted an incurable illness. Rather than make her friends worry, she decided to conceal her condition. As it progresses, the disease destroys nerve cells inside the brain, ultimately leading the body to stop functioning.
When Rem's village was attacked by the Milites Empire, she took refuge with her childhood friend Machina Kunagiri in his home. Machina's mother hid them in a closet while soldiers invaded the house and Rem and Machina witnessed his mother being shot. A soldier discovered the kids in the closet, but they escaped through the window and fled. They stopped on a hill, looking back to watch their village burn.
Years later, Rem became a student at Akademeia as a member of Class Seventh. Rem joined because she wants to become Agito, the fabled savior of Orience, still regretting being too weak to have been able to do anything to save her village. A year ago Rem was reunited with Machina, whom she had not seen in seven years despite both being in the same academy as neither knew the other was there.
Agito Cadets would train by participating in combat simulations against their classmates, and during an experimental inter-class drill, Machina and Rem were selected as representatives for their respective classes. They were surprised to see each other and from that day forth became best friends, spending time together before and after their lectures.
As the empire attacks Akademeia, Rem and Machina confront the White Tiger Secundus l'Cie Qun'mi in Akademeia's Arena. They are easily overpowered when Qun'mi activates her crystal jammer cutting Rem and Machina from the Vermilion Bird Crystal rendering them unable to use magic. The two are rescued by Ace, Seven, and Jack, who drive the l'Cie out of Akademeia and liberate the city.
Having impressed the administration with their prowess, Class Zero is officially enrolled in Akademeia, and Rem and Machina—as the best of their respective classes—are transferred to Class Zero to aid in the war effort, as the cadets are to be deployed to help reclaim the conquered areas. Rem is amazed Class Zero can circumvent the effect of the crystal jammer, and wonders how that works.
Class Zero cadets do not draw their magic power from the Vermilion Bird Crystal like most of the denizens of the Dominion of Rubrum, but from the substance known as phantoma they harvest from those felled in battle. Class Zero's "Mother" and the doctor at Akademeia, Archsorceress Arecia Al-Rashia, disdains Rem and Machina joining Class Zero, deeming them inferior to her adopted cadets, and asks Ace to conceal the truth of phantoma from the duo, letting them only know it is the source of their magic.
The cadets visit the cemetery where they talk about the Crystals erasing the memories of the dead from the living. Rem explains she always writes down everyone she knows and after a battle will look at her list for names she can't recognize, and then visits the cemetery to see their names carved on the gravemarkers, yet feels unable to mourn as she cannot remember them.
When Machina and Rem speak with fellow cadets Seven and Deuce, Rem remarks she was surprised by how much Machina had grown, as he was shorter than her when they last met. Machina comments she has not changed at all. Later, when Machina and Rem are alone, Rem asks if he still remembers their childhood and he hasn't forgotten. Rem still keeps the Knowing Tags of the villagers. Machina wishes he had been stronger, but Rem answers they were only children and there was nothing they could have done. She asks if he remembers his promise to become strong to protect her and teases him by asking if he remembers asking her to become his wife. Embarrassed, Machina denies he ever said so, and Rem pretends to be offended.
Rem still suffers from the incurable illness that will eventually kill her. She has only been able to remain active thanks to a powerful drug. She is determined to use what little time she has left to serve the Vermilion Bird. Dr. Arecia tells Rem that the medication she is on is ineffectual, and that her symptoms are worsening. She says Rem doesn't have a lot of time left. Despite this, Rem wishes to stay in Akademeia with Machina and Class Zero to fight Milites. Arecia prepares new medication for her, but says she may experience pain as a side effect. Rem asks Arecia to conceal her condition from Class Zero, especially from Machina, though he is aware there is something wrong with her.
When the cadets are sent to sabotage the imperial magitek armor program they get orders to cease fire due to a newly wrought armistice mid-mission. Class Zero's commanding officer, Kurasame Susaya, travels to the imperial capital as Chancellor Khalia Chival VI's aide and negotiates for the cadets' safety, and afterward explains the situation to them: the empire had proposed peace before the cadets' mission was underway, but they could not contact them in time to halt it. The cadets disagree with the treaty, especially Machina, positing that the empire has no right to ask for peace for being the initial aggressor.
The cadets meet Queen Andoria of the Kingdom of Concordia who explains that peace is the Will of the Crystals, and that the cadets' opposition would only lead to Tempus Finis, an apocalyptic calamity foretold in legend. The cadets struggle accepting that what they have been fighting for is against the Crystal's will, with Rem pondering if all their efforts have been pointless. Machina asks if Rem is fine but she says she is merely tired and thus decides against exploring the imperial city.
Queen Andoria is assassinated and the cadets blamed for it. The class is ambushed at the Armada Hotel and the class orderly, Aria Luricara, is shot. Rem wants to tend to her but Machina urges her to abandon Aria or they would all be killed. The cadets fight through the city while unable to contact Central Command. While the cadets remember meeting a queen, they remembers nothing else of her, meaning their memories must have been erased by the Crystals, indicating she has truly died. Jack suggests they did assassinate the queen but that memory was erased as well, but Rem doubts it.
Queen highlights it being odd they had been given leave in Ingram rather than have them sent back to Akademeia, and Machina becomes upset at the possibility they had been left behind on purpose. Rem calms him down, saying they must seek out the answers later. During their trek through the train tunnels Rem gets dizzy and tries to hide it.
After defeating an imperial magitek armor Vajra sent to destroy them, Rem is attacked by Celestia, Queen Andoria's aide, who blames Class Zero for the regicide. Machina runs to her defense, but is overpowered. The cadets convince Celestia of their innocence and she spirits them away to a deserted house in Old Lorica Region.
As Machina awakes in the cabin in the woods Rem approaches him assuring she is fine. As the two join the others outside, she becomes worried when Machina acts strangely, unaware he feels something watching him. The others explain what happened, and that they still can't contact Central Command. Machina accuses the rest of Class Zero for his brother Izana's death, and the situation escalates as the others say he should get over. Machina marches off with Rem chasing after him, saying Class Zero can't be expected to save everyone despite their strength. Machina says he will save Rem, and that he is taking a walk.
Rem apologizes for Machina's behavior, saying he isn't usually like that, but that ever since Togoreth was destroyed by the clash between l'Cie he has been gloomy. She wishes Machina would realize not everyone can be saved. When Rem gets into another coughing fit Cinque asks if she is alright, to which Rem replies it's only asthma. Cinque is concerned over Rem's involvement in future missions, but the latter says she has Arecia's permission. She promises to work harder to keep up, but Jack says she doesn't need to worry about that. When the morning comes the cadets wonder if Machina had run into Militesi forces during the night, making Rem anxious. She smiles in relief when he returns, and he apologizes for worrying her. As he begins to explain his absence Deuce cuts him off, having finally reached Central Command, and Kurasame organizes for a rescue by airship.
Back in Akademeia the cadets learn the administration suspects they had switched off their COMM on purpose to avoid communication, and that many cadets believe they had assassinated the queen leading for the queen's successor, a king, to ally with the empire against Rubrum. Rem ignores the rumor mill and ponders for ways to help the struggling Machina.
After the cadets return from a mission to reclaim Eibon, they assemble in the classroom to hear their next orders from Kurasame. Rem is late and lies she overslept when Cinque asks her about it. Machina has gone missing. Kurasame explains to the rest the upcoming battle plan against the joint Militesi-Concordian forces.
Class Zero is to be sent with the Vermilion Bird Primus l'Cie Lord Zhuyu to fight off the Concordian dragons with an airship fleet, while Kurasame will accompany the rest of Rubrum's legionaries, as well as Akademeia's cadets and trainees, to the Militesi border for Vermilion Bird Secundus l'Cie Lady Caetuna to summon a Verboten Eidolon. Rem worries she can't find Machina, and thinks that despite his strength he is unsuited for war due to his kindness.
Rem runs into Caetuna and becomes flustered to be addressed by a l'Cie. Caetuna asks if Rem values serving the Crystal above all else, and she enthusiastically confirms. Caetuna can tell there is something Rem holds even dearer and says as much, confusing her. Caetuna implores Rem to leave the dominion should she wish to protect the thing she loves most, but then shrugs that it may be of no consequence to mortals and leaves. Rem remains puzzled over Caetuna's words.
The cadets help Rubrum secure victory on the eastern front by defeating Shinryu Celestia. The western front is falling back and Class Zero is recalled as reinforcements to destroy the empire's crystal jammer allowing for Lady Caetuna to begin summoning Alexander for which Kurasame and the other cadets give their lives to complete the summoning. Alexander obliterates the Militesi forces, and Caetuna enters crystal stasis.
Class Zero visits the numerous new graves in the Akademeia cemetery but cannot comprehend the losses as all memories of Kurasame as well as the others perished have been removed from them by the Vermilion Bird Crystal. Rem laments her inability to cry over Kurasame now that she cannot remember him.
The cadetmaster visits the class and announces that due to its unique nature Class Zero is not assigned a new commanding officer. Rem wonders who will give them mission orders from them on, and Moglin, the class moogle, announces ze can take over the role of giving briefings. The cadets tease Moglin by ignoring hir and ponder if they can just rely on dominion tribunes and Central Command. Moglin gets depressed, but Rem assure they were joking, and that they would be glad to have Moglin as their new "commander."
Machina returns and finds Rem talking with Cater and Trey. When Cater nudges him playfully, Machina slaps her hand away and snaps that he will protect Rem alone. Rem is aghast at his uncharacteristic aggression, but he reiterates that he will protect her, the dominion, and all of Orience. Rem is confused at Machina's change, because usually she can always tell what is on his mind, but currently she doesn't have a clue.
After Class Zero helps Rubrum invade Concordia, Rem visits the cemetery and runs into Trey and Nine. She ponders her inability to feel sadness for the deaths of people she cannot remember. Trey says it is a blessing granted by the Crystals, as the sad memories of those perished would make them unable to go on. Rem doesn't want to be forgotten; she knows her illness will soon claim her, and is sad Machina will forget her.
Before the class is to be deployed to Ingram for the final showdown against the empire, Rem finds Machina gazing at the Vermilion Bird statue outside and he asks why she wanted to join Class Zero. Rem explains she wants to become Agito to become strong, as the feelings of helplessness, having been unable to save their village, still haunt her. Machina laments not fitting in the class, and Rem admonishes him for such talk. He claims to be strong enough to protect Rem now, and leaves the class, not partaking in the mission to conquer the imperial capital.
The dominion claims Ingram and thus conquers all of Orience. As the cadets return to Akademeia they find its cadets and legionaries slain, slaughtered by the Rursus army, signifying the beginning of the end times. Rem's illness reaches its final stages and she collapses and is taken to Arecia's office to rest. According to Deuce and Jack, she can't be woken up and her phantoma levels have decreased to dangerous levels. Nine curses Machina being missing since Rem needs him. Arecia tells the others the cadets have lived their lives according to the Will of Crystals recorded in the Akashic Records, but now that the "souls have been released" they can write their own ending, as humans have the power to decide how they live or die, hinting at a vital decision they would soon have to make.
Lord Zhuyu is defeated by the Rursan Reavers, and the Vermilion Bird Crystal is left without a l'Cie. As Class Zero learns the Militesi Marshal Cid Aulstyne headed for the newly appeared sanctuary, Pandæmonium, they surmise he plans to become Agito and decide to follow him despite knowing that without Arecia they won't be revived if they fall in battle. The Vermilion Bird, wanting one of its own to become Agito, asks Class Zero to become its l'Cie, but they refuse.
Rem is made a Vermilion Bird l'Cie in their stead and the Crystal deploys her to Pandæmonium to intercept a White Tiger l'Cie it had sensed there, Rem overpowers the l'Cie whose mask falls off, revealing his identity: Machina. Rem is accidentally impaled on his rapier and dies while asking Machina to not forget her, happy to have seen him one last time. The rest of the class happen upon Rem and Machina's crystal, the two having entered crystal stasis with Machina embracing Rem. The two aid Class Zero in spirit during their final battle against The Rursan Arbiter.
Arecia finds the crystallized pair and, under the suggestion of Tiz and Joker, revives them and history is changed as she decides to abandon the experiment to find Etro's Gate with the Agito, and departs, the living now allowed to remember the dead. By the time Machina and Rem return to Akademeia, they find their classmates perished, and stand looking out over the war-torn remains of Rubrum. Supporting Machina as he goes on to rebuild Orience after the Crystals lose their power, Rem marries him and stays by his side up to his final moments.
Machina and Rem's actions in helping Class Zero changes the fate originally intended for Orience, inspiring Arecia to alter the timestream by removing the four nations' Crystals from history, creating an alternate timeline where the war never occurred. Rem awakes up on a bench in the gardens and stretches as she looks at the sky with a smile on her face.
Gameplay
Rem dual-wields a pair of daggers in battle, but while her attack animation consists of quick slashes and stabs, her advantage does not lie in her physical strength, but her magic. Rem boasts the highest MP and magic stats and her various conditions for the Magic Cancel ability allow her to cast spells quickly and instantly. She has several abilities that allow her to restore her MP and thus, continue casting magic. Siphon Sphere and Siphon Delta can essentially recover all of her MP if used on an enemy's Killsight. With timing, she should not have to worry about MP shortages.
Rem can easily become a glass cannon, dealing high physical and magical damage. While low HP and defense remain an issue, they can be countered via equipment. Coupled with her quick movement speed Rem boasts an above average chance of survival. Arguably, Rem can become the most powerful character among the party.

Etymology
Rem's name comes from rei (零?) and mu (無?), which literally translates to "not zero".[2] In Latin, rem means "thing".
Her last name Tokimiya derives from the Japanese words: "time" (時, toki?) and "temple" (宮, miya?).
Trivia
- With Slipstream ability, Rem can move faster than chocobos on the world map.
- Rem appears on the 500th cover of Dengeki PlayStation magazine with Lightning, Serah Farron and Noel Kreiss from the Lightning Saga games, Noctis Lucis Caelum from Final Fantasy XV, and Machina. She is featured again with Machina on the cover of the 505th issue.
