Red Wings

From Final Fantasy Wiki

Emblem of the Red Wings extracted from original artwork

The Red Wings are an organization in Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (as the Redwings). They are the elite air force of Baron and pilot state of the art airships designed by Cid Pollendina. Through the Red Wings, Baron became the most powerful nation in the world, and could easily stand up to other nations who did not have the technology to build airships.

[edit] Final Fantasy IV

A Red Wings fleet takes off from Baron

At the beginning of the game, the Red Wings are commanded by the Dark Knight Cecil Harvey, who leads them to steal the Crystal of Water from Mysidia. Although they succeed, Cecil and his crew wonder why they are robbing the crystal from innocent people. When Cecil brings this up with the King of Baron, he is immediately dismissed from his post as commander, and is asked to go destroy an Eidolon in Mist.

As a replacement, the king invited Golbez to take Cecil's place as commander of the Red Wings with Kain Highwind as his second in command and monsters as the new crew. Golbez used the force of the Red Wings to attack and steal the crystals of other nations such as Damcyan and Fabul. Cid was imprisoned when he found out about this and refused to give the king his latest airship. It was later revealed that the king was in fact Cagnazzo, one of the Archfiends.

The Red Wings soar through the skies of Baron

In order to get the Crystal of Earth from Troia, Kain bribed Cecil by returning him an imprisoned Rosa Joanna Farrell in exchange for the Crystal, and used the Red Wings to travel. However, Kain was soon free of Golbez's control, and decided to help Cecil. However, Golbez still controlled the Red Wings, and took them to the underworld to find the Dark Crystals. The Red Wings were battling the tanks of the Dwarves that lived underground and through Golbez's magic, were able to claim the Dwarves' Crystal. The Red Wings are seen one final time afterwards, as they chased the Enterprise around the Underground. However, Cid outsmarted them and used a bomb to destroy them, risking his life. The rest of the party escaped on the Enterprise.

What happens to the Red Wings after this point is unknown, and it is assumed that they are disbanded. Edge finds an abandoned Red Wing airship which he steals and names the Falcon.

When Cid recovers, he forms a new airship force that fights for good, and mobilizes the nations of the world to come together to battle the Giant of Babil.

[edit] Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Ceodore, the prince of Baron, joins the Red Wings as a squire and is accompanied by Biggs and Wedge to obtain his Proof of Knighthood from Mythril. The Red Wings are attacked by airborne monsters on their journey back to Baron, before crashing nearby Mysidia, leaving Ceodore as their sole survivor. The spirits of Biggs and Wedge encourage Ceodore in the True Moon's Subterrane to stand against the Dark Knight, and save Golbez's life. In the game's ending, Kain Highwind leaves the Dragoons to become the new Captain of the Red Wings.

[edit] Other appearances

[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

"Foreign criminal clan, in control of Clan Borzoi"
—In-Game Description

The Redwings appear again at this game, with Dark Knight Grissom as their boss. The Redwings' base is at Salikawood. They first appear after "The Sages" rumor, and are fought throughout a series of battles. During these quests, Clan Nutsy must fight the Falgabirds (a reference to the Four Fiends) and after defeating Grissom, a chain of missions that involve foreign monsters left by the Redwings appear. These series of battles could be played after the game has been completed.

An interesting fact in the battle against Grissom is that, while his in-game description and assigned job is "Dark Knight", his sprite and moves are that of a Paladin (this most likely a reference to Cecil Harvey who in the start of Final Fantasy IV was a Dark Knight, but later changed to a Paladin at Mount Ordeals). This, and the fact that the Red Wings control four elemental fiends are very likely references to Final Fantasy IV.
