- "The Red Mage is a well-rounded spell caster whose repertoire can include a balance of both black and white magic."
- —Dawn of Souls Instructions
The Red Mage (あかまじゅつし, Akamajutsushi?) is a character class from the original Final Fantasy whom can be selected as a member of the Light Warriors before the game begins. True to their name, the Red Mage is clothed almost entirely in red. This class can use both Black and White Magic, as well as wield many different weapons and pieces of armor. However, being unable to wield or use the highest level magic or equipment, the Red Mage is generally relegated to a support position; a jack of all trades, but a master of none.

After an event in the game in which the party must retrieve a Rat Tail from the Citadel of Trials and return it to Bahamut, the Red Mage is upgraded to the Red Wizard (あかまどうし, Akamadōshi?). This upgraded class can wield slightly more equipment and learn magic up to level seven, and also receives a new physical appearance, which is quite similar to the old sprite.

Trivia
Edit
- The Red Mage from the original Final Fantasy is the only one in the main series who is squarely a Red Mage, and not a character using Red Magic as a job. While many characters have the shared ability to cast Black and White Magic at the same time, these characters are either Sages, do not have a specified job class, or are in a game with interchangeable jobs.
- At the party selection screen in the original NES versions, the Red Mage appears alongside the Warrior, Monk, and Thief, making it the first mage of any kind to appear in the series.
