The Red Mage is a character class from the original Final Fantasy which can be selected as a member of the Light Warriors before the game begins. True to his or her name, the Red Mage is clothed almost entirely in red. This class can use both Black and White Magic, as well as wield many different weapons and pieces of armor. However, being unable to wield or use the highest level magic or equipment, the Red Mage is generally relegated to a support position. After an event in the game in which the party must retrieve a Rat Tail from the Citadel of Trials and return it to Bahamut, the Red Mage is upgraded to the Red Wizard. This upgraded class can wield more equipment and learn more magic, and also receives a new physical appearance, which is quite similar to the old sprite.

In the Dawn of Souls remake, there are 10 optional Auto-Names for the different character classes. Each name is a reference to another character or place name in the Final Fantasy series. The 10 names for the Red Mage class are:
- Duane - Character in Final Fantasy VI
- Elayne - Character in Final Fantasy VI
- Gill - Character in Final Fantasy V
- KluYa - Character in Final Fantasy IV
- Kory - Character in Final Fantasy IV
- Lalibo - Character in Final Fantasy V
- Lola - Character in Final Fantasy VI
- Mid - Character in Final Fantasy V
- Tot - Character in Final Fantasy IX
- Yura - Character in Final Fantasy VI
In the 20th Anniversary Edition another name is added:

The Red Mage is the only full fledged Red Mage in the entire series without the ability to change his job to anything else. While many characters have the shared ability to cast Black and White Magic at the same time, these characters were either Sages or did not have a specified job class, and not Red Mages.
