Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Red chocobo (赤チョコボ, Akachokobo?) is a recurring type of chocobo. It is usually the most physically powerful type in games where it participates in battle, often possessing the devastating Choco Meteor.

An occasional feature of some red chocobos is to be at level 99. This is a reference to an infamous storyline battle in Final Fantasy Tactics featuring level scaling, where parties with a max level character may face one or more level 99 red chocobos.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy IV[]

A red chocobo appears in the Developer's Office, representing one of the staff's members. In Final Fantasy IV Advance and Complete Collection, another red chocobo appears during Cecil's trial in the Lunar Ruins. They have no influence in gameplay outside these cameos.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Red chocobos can appear among the mounts of NPCs in chocobo racing at the Gold Saucer. They cannot be acquired for riding by the player.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Choco becomes a red chocobo from the Dawn Lagoon Chocograph. Referred to as the Mountain Chocobo, he can cross hills and mountains. He later further upgrades into the navy blue Sea Chocobo. Red chocobos appear as NPCs in Chocobo's Paradise.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Adventurers can breed and raise red chocobos for use as personal mounts. The chocobo's color is merely a cosmetic difference and Red Chocobo Dye may be used to cause a player's chocobo to appear to be red regardless of its actual color.

According to lore, a breed of chocobo known as the Courser will on rare occasion be born with a red coloration instead of the usual yellow. These larger-than-average chocobos were originally bred in the Kingdom of San d'Oria for scouting purposes.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Red chocobos appear on the Ozmone Plain in the areas Haulo Green and Field of Light Winds, rarely replacing one of the usual black chocobos that spawn.

The Lv.99 Red Chocobo is the rarest and one of the most powerful enemies. To spawn it, the player must kill six chocobos in the Haulo Green area of the Ozmone Plain, then zone away two areas and return. There is a 1 in 256 chance that the Lv.99 Red Chocobo will be among the respawned normal chocobos. It continuously uses Choco Comet to do heavy damage to the party.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Red chocobos appear as enemies in Midlight's Deep among other chocobo types, and are notable for having high attack speed.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Red chocobos appear in the Archylte Steppe -Year Unknown- and can be recruited into the Paradigm Pack as Commandos.

A similar-looking chocobo, the rambunctious chocobo, may be found in various locations and time periods while traveling through the Historia Crux. Its body is covered in red feathers with green and blue plumage on its wings and tail. Its theme, "Crazy Chocobo", plays when it is ridden.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Red Chocobos appear as dangerous enemies, infamous for their Choco Meteor attack, which can be learned by Blue Mages. One first appears in The Royal City of Rabanastre The Royal City of Rabanastre, using Choco Meteor on the party and a group of Seeq before fleeing. Later, the Moogle Montblanc is attacked by a pair of red chocobos during the quest Uninvited Uninvited and must be saved by the Warrior of Light. The quest was infamous when it first released as while the chocobos were dangerous enough on their own, the multitudes that were spawned by the many players trying to complete the quest at the same time created a nightmare of overlapping Choco Meteors. Red chocobos later reappear at The Bozjan Southern Front The Bozjan Southern Front, including the deadly Red Comet who antagonizes both the IVth Imperial Legion and the Bozjan Resistance.

The player can dye their companion chocobo varying shades of red if fed the correct food at a stable, though this is purely aesthetic.

Final Fantasy XV[]

The player can dye their chocobos red at Wiz Chocobo Post, but the effect is merely cosmetic. There is also a fishing lure called Poppeck: Red Chocobo.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

The red chocobo is a type of chocobo possessing high stats and the Choco Meteor attack to deal heavy damage. If tamed, it can be ridden by player characters. Many red chocobo appearing in a flock is considered one of the toughest battles.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

Red chocobos are mentioned, although not seen, as the Gotor Sands area is "famous for its mirages and red chocobos."

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

The red-plumed chocobo rains destruction from the skies with its choco meteor.

Description

Red chocobo is one of the six types of chocobo, and the only one able to use Choco Meteor.

A level 99 chocobo named Redhawk can appear in a random battle in Goug. If the player wins, they obtain the Armlet of Whispers, which can be equipped to allow the summoning of Shemhazai in battle.

Etymology[]

The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".

食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!
