Puroboros is a fiend in Final Fantasy X encountered in the Omega Ruins.

Stats[]

In the original Japanese version, Puroboros did not absorb fire elemental attacks. It did not resist Death and Petrify prior to the International version. The latter also increased its Strength, Defense, Magic, and Magic Defense up from 36, 40, 25, and 1 respectively.

Battle[]

Puroboros

Despite its threatening amount of HP, Puroboros is relatively harmless. It grows after each attack from the player, including Attack Reels, but excluding Self-Destruct, Doublecast, group attacks, and attacks from party members with Poison or Zombie. After the third attack, if it has not been defeated, it will explode above a random party member, causing 2500 damage. It otherwise uses a physical attack, and will cast Firaga after growing once, when Provoked, and when fighting aeons. Kimahri can learn his Ronso Rage skill, Self-Destruct, from any of the Puroboros.

The Puroboros drops armor with Fireproof or Fire Eater and weapons with Firestrike. Weapons dropped by Puroboros are slightly stronger than most weapons (they have a Damage Constant of 18, while any otherwise-identical weapon has a Damage Constant of 16); a trait shared with Bomb and Grenades, but not found in Bomb King or any enemy outside the Bomb species.

Strategy[]

One can summon Ifrit to absorb Puroboros's attacks, or use NulBlaze. Doublecasting Blizzaga should finish it in no time.

Etymology[]

Pyrobolus is the Latin word for "Bomb".
