Raises party's defense.

Final Fantasy description
WHM using Protera from FF Pixel Remaster

Protera in Final Fantasy (Pixel Remaster).

Protectra (プロテア, Purotea?, lit. Protea), also known as Protera, FOG2, or Shld2, is a recurring spell in the Final Fantasy series. It is often a White Magic spell serving as the second tier of Protect, which mitigates damage done to the target.

Overview[]

PFF Protectra

Protectra in Pictlogica Final Fantasy.

Protectra serves as the recurring second tier of Protect, appearing in the original Final Fantasy as a White Magic spell that raised the defense of the entire party. The spell would be absent in later titles after its initial appearance, with the default Protect sometimes gaining the feature to be group casted. Final Fantasy XI would be the first title since the original Final Fantasy to feature Protectra, which caused the user to cast Protect on multiple party members around themselves.

Due to the series beginning to opt to using the -ga suffix for two tier magics, Protectra has often been replaced with Protectga.

The name of the spell appearing since Final Fantasy is known as Protea (プロテア, Purotea?) in Japanese, being one of the few spells in the series to still utilize the abandon -a (, a?) tier. Despite sharing similar English names, the Protera and Protectra spells from Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XIII are separate spells in Japanese; the former being Protera, utilizing the recurring the -ra (, ra?) suffix, while the latter spell is known as Proteda (プロテダ, Puroteda?), utilizing the -da (, da?) suffix.

In addition, some titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms for Protectra:

  • Protectra II - Protectra V (プロテアII - プロテアV, Purotea II - Purotea V?)- Upgraded forms of Protectra that exclusively appear as White Magics in Final Fantasy XI. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for signifying area-of-effect versions, Protectra's upgrades instead use Roman numerals for stronger tiers. Each version casts an upgraded form of Protect on all targets surrounding the caster; e.g., Protectra III casts the Protect III spell on the targets.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]
