FFIV Poison Powder

Poison Powder as seen in Final Fantasy IV.

Powder is a recurring enemy ability in the series. It is also a recurring item theme, as it appears in the form of several items, including Dream Powder, Poison Powder, Sleep Powder, Silence Powder, and Zombie Powder. Variants of attacks are usually of the same name as the items, though some, such as Silver Powder and Darkness Powder, never appear as items and are exclusive enemy abilities.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Rather than an enemy ability, Zombie Powder is an item mentioned in several quest lines. It is a powerful drug, whose ingredients are obtained by slaying zombies, that turns the one taking it into one of the living dead. The body begins to rot and decay, but the subjects memories are preserved, if somewhat clouded. It is first introduced in the mission "I Want To Forget", in which the client, who is tormented by unrequited love, wants Clan Gully to get some for him, so that he can use it to commit suicide. The player then has the choice to either slay Zombies, fulfilling his request, or Dreamhares, to create Lethean Draught to make him forget his pain instead.

It is later revealed that Zombie Powder was used to "assassinate" Frimelda Lotice, turning her into a pink zombie that the party encounters several times. Around the end of the Duelhorn quest line, it is revealed that Duke Snakehart drugged the viera girl that nursed Maquis the Phantasm back to health with Zombie Powder.

There is a cure for Zombie Powder, but the Witch of the Fens requires those who seek it to sell their life or their memories in exchange. Ghi Yelgi paid the Witch with his life in order to get the cure for Frimelda, though he still had time enough to seek her out for a duel later on. Maquis the Phantasm paid the Witch with his memories, taking Lethean Draught many times.

Spoilers end here.
