Pilgrimage

The last part of Yuna's pilgrimage.

No matter how dark the night, morning always comes, and our journey begins anew.

Lulu

In the world of Spira in Final Fantasy X, the pilgrimage (, Tabi?, lit. Journey) is the journey a summoner undertakes to defeat Sin. The summoner and their guardian(s) visit every temple of Yevon to pray to the fayth therein and gain their aeons before deeming themselves ready to journey to Zanarkand to attain the Final Aeon.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

The summoner journeys to the numerous temples of Yevon with their guardians and prays to the fayth of the temple to receive an aeon. After gaining the fayth's blessings, the summoner makes their way to the temple in the Zanarkand ruins.

Upon completing the trials of Zanarkand Dome, the summoner is required to choose one of their guardians to become the Final Aeon, who is summoned against Sin, a battle in which the summoner ultimately dies, regardless of the battle's outcome. If the Final Aeon defeats Sin, the following time period is called the Calm, and is a time where Sin is no more. Sin is not fully vanquished, however, and the Final Aeon becomes the new Sin and starts the cycle anew. The length of the Calm is implied to be short, from a few weeks to no more than one year.

Many summoners never complete their pilgrimage. A number lose their resolve upon reaching the vast plains of the Calm Lands, Zuke being one such summoner. Many others are known to have perished upon Mt. Gagazet, becoming unsent fiends due to their being no other summoners to send them. Only five summoners have completed their pilgrimage and obtained the title of high summoner, following after Lady Yunalesca's example.

Summoner Yuna was not willing to sacrifice one of her loved ones for a futile cause. Yuna and her guardians instead felled Yunalesca's unsent form inside Zanarkand Dome, after having learned she is the one who grants the Final Aeon to a summoner who completes their pilgrimage. Yuna instead traveled inside Sin to defeat the source, Yu Yevon, the creator of Sin, thus ending the need for the pilgrimage and bringing an Eternal Calm.

Spoilers end here.

Etymology[]
