Odin is an optional boss in Final Fantasy VIII. Unlike other Guardian Force battles, Odin will not attack the player, but the player must deplete his HP within the given time limit. Defeating Odin recruits him as a pseudo Guardian Force that will appear randomly at the beginning of a random encounter to dispatch the enemies.
"To him who doth vanquish me, I grant my august powers."
Proceeding up into the ruins, there are two gargoyles: one at the entrance leading to Odin, and one on top of the ruins. The entrance to Odin is locked and a five-digit code must be entered. The player must climb above to the second gargoyle and retrieve the code and two gems to be placed on the first gargoyle. The player then enters the code once the gems have been placed on the first gargoyle, and the entrance is opened.
If there is not much time left on the clock, the player may opt to leave the ruins and the time limit is reset, granting the player more time for the battle. Staying within the time limit is made easier by equipping Enc-None from Diablos.
When the player speaks to Odin, who is waiting inside, it says:
"Excellent. Prepare thyself."
"The weak shall perish. The strong shall triumph."
"Prevail over my sword, and I shall grant it to thee."
The time limit for 20:00 minutes starts once the player enters Centra Ruins. When the timer reaches 0:00, Odin will launch Zantetsuken, sending the player to the Game Over screen.
Odin will not attack before the time limit expires, which makes him an optional Draw target. Odin has the rare spell Triple that is especially potent junctioning spell, but the party must have a high Magic stat to be able to successfully draw it. Odin can also be mugged for a Luck-J Scroll.
If the player is victorious within the time limit, Odin will say:
"Thou art strong, mortals! I shall grant thee my powers."
"Call upon me in times of trouble..."
The timer does not stop as soon as Odin hits zero HP, so if the time runs out during his final battle scripts precisely as the battle is to end, the player can get the battle spoils, but after returning to the field still be ejected to the world map with a message of failure. The player must then battle Odin again, who is still found in his room, and the battle spoils can be obtained for a second time, including Odin's card; however, as it is Level 9 card the player can have only one in the inventory at any one time, so the second card will never be added to the card list.
At the end of Disc 3 when the player enters the Lunatic Pandora, a special sequence will play when the player battles Seifer if they have acquired Odin. Odin will appear to use Zantetsuken against Seifer, but Seifer will reverse the attack and bisect Odin, killing him. Several turns later, Gilgamesh will appear from a portal cut by Odin's thrown Zantetsuken and will attack Seifer to end the battle. From then on Gilgamesh will randomly appear at any time during normal battles to aid the party, and Odin is lost. If the player puts off acquiring Odin under Disc 4, the fight with Seifer will not include him or Gilgamesh, and Gilgamesh cannot be obtained as an ally while Odin will continue to appear as normal.
