Ocean Puzzle

Ocean Puzzle is a diabolical puzzle created by Pist Shaz XI in the anime Final Fantasy: Unlimited, used on the protagonists as they join the Comodeen's journey towards Teros via Cid's submarine Jane to find the Flying Water to power up Cid's airship Sylvia.

[edit] Challenges

To escape the Ocean Puzzle, the Comodeen must overcome certain challenges to the area of Wonderland they end up on, which if successful will move them one cube forward towards freedom. Lose a challenge, and they will move further back until they are consumed by Chaos. However, the Puzzle's true purpose is easily find Omega's pieces across Wonderland.

[edit] Somosan's Riddles

The first riddle requires the Comodeen to answer the riddles of Somosan, a peculiar mermaid-like giant. Somosan demands three person to answer three riddles each. Every question answered correctly advances them forward, but wrong answers will push them back to Chaos. Knave, Miles and Lisa Pacifist volunteer to answer the riddles. One of the questions was "what lifeform walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon and three in the evening?" Knave answered human (in reference to the classic riddle given by the Sphinx to Oedipus), but Somosan instead says the answer was a Wonderland lifeform. If the answer was something in the human world, it would turn out to be a Wonderland creature. If it was a Wonderland creature, then it would turn out to be an object from the human world. Thus no correct answer could be given. After falling to answer the other two, Knave was turned into a puddle for failing to answer all three questions. Miles suffered the same fate, leaving Lisa to answer the question to save everyone.

When it was Lisa's turn to answer the final question, which is "what has a face on its hair, spews fire when it drinks liquid and looks like a robot", Lisa smiled to buy some time, but Somosan saw through the fake smile. Kaze also sees this and commented on how it was meaningless. Lisa then realizes that the entire riddle game was also meaningless and answered that there is no real answer at all. Somosan fades from existence, but not before attempting to take them with her by flooding the entire cube. Lisa then uses the forbidden Kigen Art to summon the Kigen Dragon to save the submarine with Kaze saving Lisa when she falters. But due to the Elenium, Lisa was able to stay alive with the excess energy restoring Knave and Miles and everyone surviving the first obstacle.

[edit] Frog Sage

The next challenge brought them to a sea of mud where the submarine slowly sinks. A Frog Sage appeared in front of Cid and demands that Cid solve the puzzle, but not before turning him into a frog.

Cid tries to reach out to everyone but fail each time. At first, Cid was discovered by Fungo who tries to eat him. Next, Cid stumbles into Knave showering in his bathroom, who comments that he hates frog. Next, Chobi chases Cid, who is then discovered by Yu. Yu wanted to keep him as a pet and named him Keronta, but when Ai finds out she flushes him down the toilet and out of the submarine.

Cid discovers an inter-dimensional border and enters it, taking him into a field where Chocobaba and Chocoimo were having a picnic. Their chocobo discovered Cid, and brought him to old ladies, who recalled a legend where a prince was cursed into a frog and how he is rescued by a kiss from a maiden. They kissed him but it did not work, however, Cid returns to the submarine, convinced that it could work.

On the way, Cid calculates the energy needed to save the submarine. Cid finds Lisa and attempts to have her kiss him, but Lisa pushes him away with her Kigen Arts. Yu discovers him again and tries to keep him but Ai throws him away again. They both tell Lisa and alerts everyone in the submarine. Cid runs away in panic until he passes out in front of Miles. Miles loves to eat frogs, and was going to eat Cid, but he manages to kiss her and the curse was lifted.

Even though the curse is lifted, the Frog Sage refuses to help, prompting Cid to use all the energy they had to push Jane forward to any dimensional rift they found. The Comodeen was saved.

[edit] Madoushi

The next challenge was made by Oscha. The Comodeen had reached a world and landed on a cloud's surface. They did not fall down the cloud, and assuming everything was safe, the Comodeen enjoys the time playing on the cloud. Suddenly, ruins appeared, and along it was Madoushi, revived by Oscha. Madoushi spews red mist on the Comodeen, paralyzing them. Kaze summons Shiva to attack him, but only manages to crack his Mist Sword. Makenshi then appears, and Madoushi explains that he has searched for Makenshi to settle their rivalry.

They fought each other and even summoned their Mist Dragons. Finally Makenshi defeats him by destroying his Sword. Madoushi disappears, and the fight next turned towards Kaze. However, Pist refuses to let this continue, explaining to Earl Tyrant that the energy released between these two Unlimiteds can destroy the Ocean Puzzle. Oscha agrees, and the Earl allows Pist to move them.

[edit] Ai encounters Clear

As the submarine continues its trek across the Ocean Puzzle, Yu and Ai witnessed a ghostly creature with Ai's head swimming in the depths. Ai was furious when the creature mocked her, and accidentally pushed over the submarine's viewport, falling through the dimensional puzzle into a mysterious land.

Here, she meets with an enigmatic iridescent humanoid who calls himself Clear who is under pursuit by Pist Shaz's minions. They managed to escape, but Clear attempts to steer clear of Ai. Ai soon finds out that he is a part of Omega and is searching for its "siblings". Even though he is the embodiment of destruction, Ai was safe due to the Flying Water cloak and gloves he wore.

Later, Pist's minions managed to capture Ai. Clear managed to save her, but his glove came off, unleashing his destructive power. Yu and Lisa appeared at the scene on Chobi and flew Ai back to the submarine. Apparently, Clear was successfully captured.

[edit] The Wandering Ocean

Later on, the submarine stumbles upon an endless desert. Ai attempts to get a useful item out of PoshePocket, but it spat out a Cactuar instead. This led them to an encounter with a whole community of Cactuars, and apparently Fungo could understand them.

The Cactuars report that a "wandering ocean" is destroying their village, forcing them to stay underground. The Comodeen attempted to help remove the wandering ocean, but all their efforts failed miserably. Finally, the Cactuars used their life energy and formed a giant tornado to suck out the ocean and dissipate them. They seemed to have died as a result, but the sun's energy revived them. The party continues on...

[edit] Memory Lane

Passing through the Ocean Puzzle, the submarine arrived at a seemingly empty town in a peaceful meadow. The Comodeen stopped by to explore the place, and began reminiscing about their past. Soon, the entire adult members of the crew were enchanted by their nostalgic memories. Ai, Yu and Fungo continued on to meet Moogle, a creature who apparently know Kaze. Moogle explained that a tower in the town is causing people to be trapped in their memories, and kids have less memories than adults which is why Ai, Yu and Fungo have not succumbed. The trio were apparently caught in it later, leaving Moogle the only one left to save them. He finds Kaze at the tower, who was also trapped in his memories. However, his memories are mostly bad, which later wakes him up. Moogle helped power up his Demon Gun, which he used to summon Ixion and destroy the tower. Everyone woke up, and later Moogle joined the crew as they continue through the puzzle.

Wonder how much Clear paid to this tailor to make his Flying Water clothes... er...

Later on, the submarine Jane arrives in a bubble-like world, which is identified as Teros. Here, they meet Bolbol, the tailor responsible for Clear's Flying Water cloak, who makes them for sky high prices. There is a great amount of Flying Water here, and Cid announces that they have enough to power up the airship Silvia. Just then, Pist arrives to corrupt Kaze's Giga-Phoenix summon using Blue Elenium, causing the summon to destroy all of the Flying Water. Makenshi later appears, summoning his Mist Dragon and destroying the corrupt Giga-Phoenix. Kaze then attempts to face off against Makenshi, but Teros was apparently crumbling, forcing them all to leave into the Puzzle again.

[edit] Destruction

Makenshi later meets with Pist Shaz, who happily reveals that Gaudium already knew that he was not the ally they assume him to be. Pist had managed to capture all of Omega's parts and a sum of Flying Water within the Ocean Puzzle. Even so, Makenshi brings out an empty bottle and absorbed Pist as he was made of water, and ironically summons him as a Mist Dragon to destroy the Ocean Puzzle. This caused the Omega Crystals to disappear. At that time, the submarine Jane had managed to escape the Puzzle, stumbling into Gaudium territory. Thus ends Pist Shaz and Ocean Puzzle, and starts the final confrontation with Earl Tyrant.
