The Nintendo GameCube (initially Project Dolphin and commonly abbreviated GCN) is Nintendo's fourth home video game console, belonging to the sixth-generation era. The GameCube itself was the most compact and least expensive of the sixth generation era consoles. The GameCube was released in 2001, and was the first console to have a modern wireless controller, the WaveBird, available as an add-on. In late 2006, it was succeeded by the Wii, which is backward compatible with GameCube games, controllers, memory cards, and some accessories.
