Ninja blades (忍者刀, Ninja Katana?), also known as ninjato, ninja swords, ninja daggers, short swords, or dirks, are recurring weapons throughout the Final Fantasy series, often exclusive to the Ninja job. Depending on the game ninja blades are sometimes classified as daggers or swords.

Profile

Ninja blades are katana variants, based on a theoretical real life counterpart variant, the ninjato, blades said to have been wielded and crafted by ninjas themselves to accompany their repertoire and skill. Likewise to their real life counterparts, ninja blades are straight, short, and even more agile than their larger counterparts, and often remain exclusive to their namesake job class.

Depending upon their presentation, ninja blades will often meld between hosting their own set list, commonly found in Ivalice titles, or, boast the names of creators commonly associated with katana set lists. They may deal Dark-elemental damage, keeping in theme with their shadowy and stealth based associative class.

Etymology

A ninja was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan who specialized in unorthodox warfare. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, and open combat in certain situations.

The ninjatō (忍者刀), ninjaken (忍者剣), or shinobigatana (忍刀), are allegedly the preferred weapon that the Shinobi of feudal Japan carried. It is portrayed by modern ninjutsu practitioners (including Masaaki Hatsumi and Stephen K. Hayes) and is prominently featured in popular culture. Replicas of this weapon are prominently on display in both the Koka Ninja Village Museum in Kōka, Shiga and the Iga-ryū Ninja Museum in Iga, Mie. Historically, there is no physical evidence for the existence of this "katana-like short sword legendarily used by ninja", though it is believed that they are based on the design of the wakizashi or chokutō swords.
