Nereid, also known as Nergade, is a boss from Final Fantasy V that appears alongside Triton and Phobos when the player attempts to obtain the tablet located in the Great Sea Trench. In the Finest Fantasy for Advance and 2013 versions, the trio also appears in the Sealed Temple's Cloister of the Dead. The three need to be defeated together to win.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Nereid is the ice-elemental member of the trio. It uses physical attacks, Frost (a party-wide Ice attack that inflicts sap), Ice Storm (a party-wide ice attack), and single target casts of Blizzaga.

Like his brothers, he is Undead and lacks the Heavy flag. He is vulnerable to poison, darkness, silence, old, petrify, death, confuse, sleep, paralyze, and stop status ailments.

Similar to the Gargoyles, Triton, Nereid, and Phobos must be eliminated simultaneously, else they revive and retort with Delta Attack. Nereid is susceptible to Level 4 Graviga and Level 2 Old, as unlike most bosses, it is not a Heavy type.

Strategy[]

The battle can be won easily by using Odin. The Magic Lamp can even be recharged nearby.

Otherwise, the three can be easily defeated by repeated use of the Bard's Requiem and multi-target attacks, such as summons, though one should only use water, wind, or non-elemental attacks to ensure that all three fall together.

Early design documents of the game sent to Yoshitaka Amano mention that Nereid, Triton, and Phobos were initially meant to be fought at the Tycoon Meteorite. The trio were described to be male version of the Magus Sisters from Final Fantasy IV. [1]

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, the Nereids are sea nymphs (female spirits of sea waters), the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, sisters to Nerites. They were distinct from the mermaid-like Sirens. They often accompany Poseidon and can be friendly and helpful to sailors fighting perilous storms.

The enemy's Japanese name is a katakana form of "Nereid" (ネレイド, Nereido?) with a (ge?) in the middle. This may be to make its name similar to the English word "renegade" (レネゲイド, renegeido?).
