Mythril Shield (ミスリルシールド, Misuriru Shīrudo?), also known as Silver, Silver Shield, Steel Shield, Mithril Shield, and Mythril, is a recurring shield in the series.

Mythril Shield is a low-ranked shield that provides 8 Defense. It can be bought for 2,500 gil (2,000 gil in Easy Mode) at Crescent Lake or found at Cavern of Earth and Mount Gulg. It can be equipped by the Warrior, Knight, and Ninja classes.

Mythril Shield is a low-ranked shield that provides 6% Evasion and -70 Int/Spr (in the NES/WSC versions). It can be bought for 300 gil (500 in the NES/PSX versions) at Altair and Machanon, found at Snow Cave and Deist Cavern, or dropped from Land Turtle.

Final Fantasy IIIEdit

III Mythril Shield is a low-ranked shield that can be bought for 180 gil at Kazus and Canaan.

In the NES version, it provides 5 Defense, 7 Magic Defense and 7% Evade. In the 3D versions, it provides 3 Defense and 3 Magic Defense.

Mythril Shield is a low to mid-ranked shield that provides 3 Defense, 2 Magic Defense, 26 Evade, 2 Magic Evade, and resistance towards attacks from Ghouls. It can be bought for 1,000 gil at Mythril or dropped from Fell Turtle, Armadillo, Magma Tortoise, Ironback, and Mythril Golem. It can be equipped by Cecil, Kain, and Cid.

In the 3D remakes, in addition to all of the original bonuses, it also grants immunity to Confuse and Silence, and can also be stolen from Armadillo.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-Edit

FFIV-I- Mythril Shield returns, providing the same stats as before. It is initially equipped on Cecil, and can be dropped from Armadillo, Magma Tortoise, and Mythril Golem. Cid can also equip this shield.

Final Fantasy IV: The After YearsEdit

FFIVTAY Mythril Shield returns as a low-ranked shield that provides the same stats as before, minus the resistance to Ghouls. It can be bought for 1,000 gil at Mythril, found at Devil's Road (Kain's Tale), Lunar Subterrane (Lunarians' Tale), and in Rydia's Challenge Dungeon, or dropped from Fell Turtle, Magma Tortoise, Mythril Golem, and Armadillo. It can be equipped by Cecil, Cid, Kain, Ceodore, and Golbez.

Mythril Shield is a low-ranked shield that provides 27 Defense, 18 Magic Defense, and 10% Evade. It can be bought for 1,200 gil at Narshe, Kohlingen, and Jidoor, stolen from General, or recruiting Setzer, Mog, Strago, Relm, and Gogo. It can be equipped by everyone except Umaro.

Final Fantasy XEdit

X Mythril Shield is an armor for Tidus, obtained when the dominant abilities on any shield are any Defense+ % and any Magic Defense+ % abilities.

Final Fantasy TacticsEdit

FFT Mythril Shield is a low to mid-ranked shield that provides 22% Physical Evasion and 5% Magic Evasion. It can be bought for 2,500 gil from an Outfitter after Zeirchele Falls in Chapter 2 or as rare treasure from Castled City of Zaland and Mining Town of Gollund.

EtymologyEdit

The word "mythril" or "mithril" is a metal found in many fantasy worlds. It was originally introduced by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, being present in his Middle-earth. It resembles silver but is stronger than steel, and much lighter in weight than either. The author first wrote of it in The Lord of the Rings, and it is retrospectively mentioned in the third, revised edition of The Hobbit in 1966. In the first 1937 edition, the mail shirt given to Bilbo is described as being made of "silvered steel". The name mithril comes from two words in Sindarin—mith, meaning "grey" or "mist", and ril meaning "glitter".
