Mt. Nibel is a mountain located near the small village of Nibelheim in Final Fantasy VII. It is the site for a Shin-Ra Mako Reactor and is where Jenova was stored for some time. [edit] Storyline

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Many years ago, Tifa Lockhart tried to climb Mt. Nibel in order to be reunited with her dead mother, whom she believed to be at the top of the mountain. A young Cloud Strife followed, but when Tifa was injured by a fall, the local townsfolk blamed him.

Five years prior to the events of the game, Sephiroth, Zack Fair, and several Shin-Ra troops including Cloud Strife, were sent to Nibelheim to investigate the reactor and reports of monsters nearby. With Tifa Lockhart as their guide from Nibelheim, the group climbed Mt. Nibel. However, a broken bridge divided the party up. From here, Cloud and Sephiroth traveled through the caverns. This is the only place in which Sephiroth is a member of the party, however he cannot be controlled. Due to his high level and stats, Sephiroth is easily capable of defeating the monsters in Mt. Nibel.

Finally the party reached the peak and entered the reactor, where several human test subjects lay in tanks of Mako, and the remains of Jenova were sealed in a separate chamber. Troubled by the idea that he was created by the same process as the beings in the Mako tanks and the words of Genesis, Sephiroth returned to Nibelheim to investigate the matter using the abandoned Shin-Ra mansion and the research notes in its basement.

With what he learned, Sephiroth was driven mad and razed Nibelheim before returning to Mt. Nibel to claim the remains of Jenova, who he had come to believe was his mother. Pursued by Zack, Cloud, Tifa and her father. Sephiroth fatally wounded Zack and Tifa's father and also stabbed Tifa in the process of destroying the machinery in Jenova's chamber and claiming her head. Stabbed and heavily wounded by Cloud using Zack's Buster Sword, Sephiroth impaled Cloud with his sword, but Cloud was able to reverse the attack to pitch Sephiroth over the bridge and into the Lifestream.

During the events of Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife and his party cross through Mt. Nibel on during their worldwide journey after Sephiroth.
