Mount Gulug
The unwelcoming, fiery caverns of Mount Gulug.
"No mortal has entered those depths ever since the entrance was mysteriously sealed."
—Bishop at Esto Gaza

Mount Gulug (グルグ火山, Gurugu-kazan?) is an extinct volcano on the Lost Continent in Final Fantasy IX. It was sealed a long time ago in the past, but was re-opened by Kuja with the Gulug Stone. It used to be inhabited by an unseen race of Mole People, but during the time it is visited in the game the Mole People are gone and the place is infested with monsters.

Mount Gulug is one of the locations from Terra that ended up on Gaia 5,000 years ago due to Garland's failed attempt to merge the two planets into one.

StoryEdit

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Kuja and his army of black mages take Eiko to Mount Gulug in order to extract eidolons from her. Kuja orders the court jesters, Zorn and Thorn, to perform the ritual that would harness Eiko's summoning powers for his own. The ceremony fails, as eidolons cannot be extracted from their summoner until she or he has attained the age of 16.

Zidane and his party follow Kuja into the depths of the volcano and arrive in time to witness Mog, Eiko's pet Moogle, defend her from Zorn and Thorn. Mog transforms into the eidolon Madeen through Trance and repels the jesters via Terra Homing. Eiko receives the Ribbon in memory of Mog and gains the ability to summon Madeen. Zidane arrives in time to help Eiko battle Zorn and Thorn, who have morphed into the monstrous Meltigemini. After the beast's defeat, Zidane and his friends find Kuja has fled. In a back room, the heroes rescue Queen Hilda, Regent Cid's estranged wife.
