Moombas (ムンバ, Munba?) are a possible final stage in the evolving life cycle of a Shumi in Final Fantasy VIII. They are generally used as slaves or laborers and as such are treated poorly by their human masters; however, they are held highly as an ideal by the Shumi in Shumi Village.
Did you not see their noble features? Their gem-like eyes revealing innocence? Their bright red hair symbolizing passion? Their spectacular hair signifying power! Their soothing, adorable cries! Their mighty hands with incredible strength! Their proud postures demanding respect!
Generally benign, Moombas possess red fur-covered bodies. Standing at about a meter in height, they get around via running or walking on all fours, but can stand on their hind legs when stationary. Their paws are oversized in comparison to their bodies, with each possessing sharp claws which, coupled with sharp teeth, can be used for defense. They are unable to speak human language as a whole, but can be taught to speak individual words.
Moombas mainly use expressive body language to convey their meaning to humans, but have no difficulty communicating with other Moombas and Shumi in more animalistic sounds. Moombas can recognize people by smelling or licking their blood.
In Final Fantasy VIII, Moombas can be summoned into battle, if one has the Friendship item, only obtainable with the Pocket Station through Chocobo World. When summoned, it will initiate "MoombaMoomba" (ムンバムンバムンバ, Munba Munba Munba?), which reduces one target's HP down to 1. If the target has more than 9,999 HP, it will do 9,999 damage instead.
Moomba Warrior appears as a weapom.
A Moomba, named "Mumba" in-game, is a secret character in Chocobo Racing that can be unlocked after finishing the Story Mode four times, after which Mumba can be selected by pressing L2 over Squall once he is unlocked.
Moomba appears in the Trading Card Game as an Ice element Eidolon card. It allows the player to choose one Forward and deal it damage equal to that Forward's power minus 1000. The Moomba is also an EX Burst card, causing its effect to activate immediately when sent to the Break Zone from the deck.
