Midgardsormr, also known as Terrato in earlier translations, is an esper in Final Fantasy VI who can be acquired as a magicite.

Profile[]

Midgardsormr is a bulky serpent creature with brown skin, a green tongue, and red eyes.

Story[]

Midgardsormr's magicite came to be in the possession of Umaro by the time of the World of Ruin. After the party recruited Mog, he told them to find Umaro and bring them with them. In the Yeti's Cave the party found a bone carving Umaro had made with Midgardsormr's magicite in the eye. The party took the magicite, but doing so provoked Umaro to attack them.

Gameplay[]

Abyssal Maw from FFVI Pixel Remaster

Abyssal Maw (Pixel Remaster).

Midgardsormr costs 40 MP to summon, and casts Abyssal Maw (Earth Aura in the Super NES and PlayStation versions), which deals unblockable Earth Earth-elemental damage to all opponents, but misses on flying and floating targets. Its spell power is 93. Its level up bonus is +30% HP gain.

Midgardsormr has utility as one of the few earth-elemental abilities the party can access, and costs very little MP to use compared to other espers. However, it is then hindered by the fact the party can only use it once. Its level up bonus is not very helpful due to the small amount of HP the party usually gains on level up; it would take many levels with Midgardsormr to have a noticeable difference, and if the player is interested in getting characters to 9,999 HP for its own sake, Crusader offers a superior +50% bonus.

Spells[]

Midgardsormr's spells are variably useful, but take a long time to learn. Quake and Tornado strike all enemies as well as all party members, so care must be taken when using them, though Float can be cast to negate the former's effects. Quake is another way in which the party can utilize the comparatively rare earth element.

Other Appearances[]

Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]

Midgardsormr is one of the rank 4 earth-elemental magicites in Record Keeper. When summoned it uses Ultra Abyssal Maw, dealing five hits of earth-elemental magic damage to all enemies and raising the earth damage of the party. Its attacks are Tail, Stonega, and Quake; Tail deals two hits of physical damage to all enemies, Stonega deals two hits of earth magic damage to one enemy, and Quake deals two hits of earth magic damage to all enemies.

Etymology[]

The name hails from Norse mythology, in which Midgardsormr (Old Norse: Miðgarðsormr; also known as the World Serpent or Jörmungandr) was the middle child of Loki and a giantess named Angrboda. Odin threw it into the ocean that encircles Midgard and it eventually grew large enough to reach around the entire world and bite its own tail. It had been foreseen that on the day of Ragnarök it would battle with its arch-nemesis: Thor, the god of thunder. The sky would darken from the poison mist emitted by Midgardsormr, and the battle would end in the death of both. Thor would first kill Midgardsormr and then stagger nine steps before dying from its poison.

This creature was previously named Terrato. Terrato is most likely a portmanteau that combines Latin terra ("earth") with Greek teratos ("monster"). As a word root, terato- is only found in medical science contexts.
