The Midgar Wasteland (ミッドガル荒れ地, Middogaru arechi?) is a desolate area surrounding the city of Midgar and, later, the city of Edge in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Barren of flora due to the siphoning of the Planet's life energy in Midgar, the area is a wasteland on the road to recovery after the Mako Reactors ceased the siphoning of Lifestream.

Zack and a Mako-poisoned Cloud escape from confinement in the Shinra Manor basement, and a year later make it to the Midgar Wasteland. Before they can enter the city, Shinra soldiers ambush the two. Zack sets Cloud down so he can fight the soldiers, but he is gunned down and left for dead; Cloud is left alone since the soldiers assume him dead.
Cloud drags himself to his friend, who presents him with the Buster Sword and announces him as his "living legacy", before passing away. The events alter Cloud's psyche and his life experiences are overwritten with those of Zack's, and he makes it to Midgar alone, believing himself to be an ex-SOLDIER.
Two years after Meteorfall, the now rusted Buster Sword marks the spot where Zack died. Cloud is in the wasteland listening to a voicemail left by Tifa on his phone, before he prepares to return to Edge, unaware that he is being watched by the Remnants of Sephiroth - Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo. Believing Cloud to know the location of their "mother", Jenova, Kadaj summons Shadow Creepers to ambush Cloud while Loz and Yazoo chase him on their motorcycles. Cloud fends off the brothers and the Creepers with his Fusion Swords, and Kadaj calls off the ambush to seek his answers elsewhere.
After disrupting a Deepground raid at Kalm, Vincent Valentine is recruited by Reeve Tuesti to assist the World Regenesis Organization in freeing the city of Edge from a similar attack. After receiving a message from Weiss the Immaculate, declaring Deepground was going to purge the world, the WRO convoy on route to Edge is attacked and Vincent is forced to traverse the Midgar Wasteland to reach the city.
