Yuna MeteorStrike Normal

Meteor Strike used by Yuna in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

Meteor Strike (メテオストライク, Meteo Sutoraiku?), also known as Suplex and Meteordrive, is an ability in the Final Fantasy series. It has appeared as both an ability used by Ifrit and as a powerful technique for Monks that involves picking up enemies and slamming them to the ground.

Appearances

Final Fantasy VI

Meteor Strike, known as Suplex in SNES and PlayStation versions, is a Blitz Sabin can use. If used on a single enemy its Battle power is 180, making it potentially the strongest Blitz technique. However, if there are more than one enemy present, the power of Meteor Strike is halved despite it only affecting one enemy.

Some enemies are unaffected by Meteor Strike, however the Phantom Train is vulnerable to Sabin's Meteor Strike. The ability is called Suplex in the older translations. A suplex is a throw which usually involves arching/bridging either overhead or twisting to the side, so the opponent is slammed to the mat back-first. Sabin's ability to suplex a train has become an inside joke among fans.

Final Fantasy VII

Template:Sideicon Meteor Strike is Tifa's sixth Limit Break. It does 1.875 times normal damage to a single enemy, and the damage can be doubled if Tifa's slot reels are stopped correctly.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Template:Sideicon

Tifa uses Meteordrive at the climax of her fight with Loz in the Sector 5 Church, rushing him along the ground and flinging him into the air, and then leaping up after him to throw him to the ground.

Final Fantasy VIII

Template:Sideicon Zell's Limit Break Duel can use Meteor Strike. Meteor Strike does more damage the more HP the target has, making it effective against powerful enemies. It is learned from Combat King 002. It can be used before being unlocked by inputting the correct button combination, but will not appear as an option.

Zell can also use Meteor Barret, but it functions differently and has a different animation.

Description

Ifrit can use Meteor Strike to attack for moderate non-elemental damage. Its damage is considered neither physical or magical, instead falling into "special" damage category. This means it will be unaffected by Protect or Shell. Using it delays Ifrit's next turn. Belgemine's Ifrit and Isaaru's Ifrit, Grothia, both can use Meteor Strike. The boss Dark Ifrit can also uses a version of Meteor Strike, which delays the target and breaks the damage limit. Dark Ifrit's Meteor Strike is magical unlike most special attacks, and hits 20,310 to 22,933 damage with no magical buffs or other protections in place.

Final Fantasy X-2

Template:Sideicon The boss Ifrit uses Meteor Strike when fought in Kilika Temple during Chapter 3. It inflicts moderate non-elemental damage.

Final Fantasy XI

Template:Sideicon Template:FFXI Spell Meteor Strike is a Blood Pact: Rage for Ifrit, purchased with three Merit Points after a Summoner has reached level 75 or higher. Meteor Strike deals massive fire magic damage to an enemy. Damage varies with Ifrit's TP.

Meteor Strike, along with the other Merit Blood Pacts, has a noticeably longer range then most other Blood Pacts, meaning these Blood Pacts are less likely to interrupt due to distance from a target. Spending additional Merit Points on this ability will increase its TP Bonus by 40 for each merit, increasing its power.

Final Fantasy Type-0

Template:Sideicon Meteor Strike is a command for the Ifrit-Class Eidolons Ifrit, Firebrand and Vulcan. The Eidolon hurls a sphere of flames at enemies, dealing fire-type damage. Ignis uses an upgraded version, called "Meteor Mash."

Tifa learns Meteor Strike at Level 36, and it requires 30 CP to equip and 130 AP to master. Yuna's Meteor Strike summons Ifrit to perform a fiery two-hit claw attack that knocks the opponent back. It costs 30 CP to equip and 80 AP to master.

Other media

During the battle in Dead Fantasy II, Tifa uses her Meteor Strike towards Kasumi and a reference to the same move she uses against Loz in the movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. She later used this ability against Hitomi as her move is similar to a German back suplex before she blasts her with three of her Materia magic.

In ScrewAttack!'s Yang VS Tifa | DEATH BATTLE!, Tifa performs Meteor Strike as part of her Limit Break chain.

Etymology

A meteor or "shooting star" is the visible streak of light from a meteoroid or micrometeoroid, heated and glowing from entering the Earth's atmosphere, as it sheds glowing material in its wake. Meteors rarely explode in the Earth's atmosphere. The term has become associated with quickness with the adjective "meteoric". In the context of myth and superstition, meteors and comets sighted in Ancient and Medieval Europe were once held as ill omen, said to be the message of the heavens' displeasure of man's affairs to herald grave catastrophes.

Pieces that withstand atmospheric ablation are known as meteorites, but the name of the spell in the series refers to the overall phenomenon.

A suplex is an offensive move used in both professional and amateur wrestling. A suplex is a throw that involves lifting the opponent and bridging or rolling to slam the opponent on their back.
