Meteor
From Final Fantasy Wiki
Meteor (メテオ, Meteo), also known as Meteo, is a recurring spell from the series. Usually one of the stronger spells in the games it appears in, it summons a barrage of meteorites to bombard enemies. It either does non-elemental damage, or hits for mediocre damage multiple times. It was an important plot device in Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VII.
Actual meteors that were not spells were also important plot devices in Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
[edit] Appearances
[edit] Final Fantasy II
Starfall X is spell similar to Meteor which is used by Emperor Mateus in the final battle in Castle Pandaemonium. Additionally, in the Soul of Rebirth remake, the Light Emperor uses Starfall XVI in the final battle in Arubboth.
[edit] Final Fantasy III
Meteor, also known as Meteo, is a level eight Black Magic which can be bought for 60,000 gil from the magic shop in Eureka. It deals random Earth-elemental damage to its target. It is only usable by the Magus, Sage, and Onion Knight classes.
[edit] Final Fantasy IV
- Main article: Meteor (Final Fantasy IV)
The legendary ultimate spell, it is both the strongest Black Magic and a major plot device. It was originally translated as Meteo. It costs 99 MP to cast and takes about 2-3 turns to cast, but deals tremendous damage to all enemies.
[edit] Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Meteor is once again the ultimate spell. Golbez and Fusoya double cast Meteor to destroy Zeromus's Malice, who was brought back to life by the Mysterious Girl.
[edit] Final Fantasy V
Meteor, also known as Meteo, is a Level 6 Time Magic spell. It attacks four times with randomly chosen targets and damage, and costs 42 MP to cast. It is acquired after obtaining the third Tablet in the Great Sea Trench
[edit] Final Fantasy VI
Meteor can be learned from Odin and Crusader. It costs 62 MP to cast.
A enemy ability originally named Meteo and later renamed Meteor also exists with a different graphic, strength, and hit rate (it essentially hits a lot harder than Meteor, but has a chance to miss).
[edit] Final Fantasy VII
- Main article: Meteor (Final Fantasy VII)
Meteor in Final Fantasy VII is not a usable spell but an important plot point. Gameplay substitutes for the spell are known as Comet and Comet2, as well as Cloud's Limit Break attack, Meteorain.
[edit] Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-
Although the Black Materia and "Meteor" don't make an appearance in Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-, Omega Weiss possesses an ability with the same name, although on a far less scale to the plot device. The spell is only labeled in the game's guide, created by a third-party company, and has been dubbed "Omega Meteor" by fans to fit the naming pattern of the ultimate attacks of the other Weapon enemies in the Compilation.
[edit] Final Fantasy VIII
Meteor deals low amounts of damage, at ten separate intervals, which are divided between targets at random. The result can be anywhere from negligible to devastating. It can be drawn from a number of high level monsters, and refined from items using the Forbidden Magic Refine ability. Exploiting the use of Meteor in tandem with Rinoa's Angel Wing Limit Break along with ideal conditions can produce 99,990 points of damage each attack round.
[edit] Final Fantasy IX
Meteor can be cast by Vivi for 42 MP. It has a chance of doing extreme damage, or nothing at all. Zorn has the ability to cast a lesser version called Meteorite after being charged by Thorn. Zidane also has a SFX version of the ability called Medeo during the sword fight at the beginning of the game.
[edit] Tetra Master
- Card 058
- Location: Treno, Card Stadium
[edit] Final Fantasy X
The Behemoth King will unleash Meteor on the party as it dies.
[edit] Final Fantasy X-2
The bosses Humbaba and Trema use the spell Meteor. The Chocobo has a variant called Choco Meteo. Dark Knights can learn the ability Black Sky, which deals ten random hits to all enemies. Black Sky requires Death to be mastered, 100 AP to master the spell, and costs 80 MP to cast. It uses similar animation to the Meteor spell. In International+Last Mission, Lulu can cast Meteor.
[edit] Final Fantasy XI
Meteor is not a spell in Final Fantasy XI available to players; however, it is seen being cast by a group of Tarutaru Black Mages in the game's opening CGI cutscene. In-game, the spell is only available to a select few Hyper Notorious Monsters including the Behemoth-class monsters, Promathia, and represents perhaps the most prevalent reason that Absolute Virtue remains unbeatable.
Of note, there exists a is a lesser version of the spell, called Meteorite, available to Carbuncle as one of its Blood Pacts. It inflicts light-based magical damage on a single target (see Comet).
[edit] Final Fantasy XII
Meteor is the name of Exodus' ultimate attack. It deals random damage to all enemies in range, with a possibility of doing 30,000 damage.
[edit] Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Meteor is used by the Esper Exodus, and it damages enemies over a small area.
[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics
Time Mages and Hashmal can cast Meteor. It cannot be calculated and has a long charge time. The Red Chocobo also has a weaker version of Meteor called Choco Meteor that has no charge time, but it is fairly weaker than the original spell. The Time Mage version costs 70 MP, has a speed of 8, and needs 1500 JP to learn.
[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Alchemists can cast Meteor. They learn the spell from the Scorpion Tail Mace. It deals heavy non-elemental damage in a standard X-shaped area.
[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Alchemists can cast Protometeor, a spell identical to the Meteor spell. The Sprite-type enemies (Sprite, Banshee, etc.) can also sometimes cast Meteorite which is basically a weaker version of Meteor.
[edit] Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Meteor is a Wizard Magic spell that Benjamin can use. It deals Earth damage despite its animation of raining fire.
[edit] Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Meteor is a spell cast by the Meteor Parasite in the third stage.
[edit] Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates
Meteor is cast by piling Blizzard, Thunder, Clear, and Raise.
[edit] Dissidia Final Fantasy
Various characters learn variations of Meteor. Terra's Meteor spell is a Brave attack which summons several meteorites from the sky slam into the ground around opponents. Kefka's version of Meteor summons five small meteors which hit the ground surrounding the opponent and bounce towards them. Onion Knight's Comet attack fires a barrage of small fireballs at enemies, and was known as "Petit Meteor" in the Japanese release. He also uses Meteor in his "Spellbook" EX Burst.
Sephiroth has an attack based on Meteor called "Black Materia", where he summons a large meteor from the sky to attack enemies, its potency varying depending on the charge time of the attack. The Emperor also has his signature "Starfall" attack, which summons a barrage of fireballs from above followed by the descent of a large meteor. Jecht has a HP attack called "Ultimate Jecht Shot" where he catches a meteor, jumps, and then throws it at an opponent. Cloud also has his Limit Break "Meteorain" as an HP attack, which hurls several meteors at the opponent.
