Mental Break (メンタルブレイク, Mentaru Bureiku?), also known as Deshell (デシェル, Desheru?) or Shear, is a Knight ability that reduces the target's Magic Defense. In some games, it instead reduces Magic.

AppearancesEdit

Final Fantasy IXEdit

Mental Break is one of Steiner's Sword Arts. It halves a target's Magic Defense, costs 8 MP to use, and can be learned for 45 AP from the Ice Brand and Gold Helm. It has a 50% accuracy, but can be used repeatedly.

Final Fantasy XEdit

Mental Break is found in Auron's section of the Sphere Grid. It can also be cast through the ability Full Break, Auron's Overdrive, Banishing Blade, or Rikku's Mix Overdrive Ability, Chaos Grenade. It costs 12 MP to cast. It halves a target's Magic Defense.

Final Fantasy X-2Edit

Used by the Warrior Dressphere. It also appears in the form of Mental Eraser, usable by Rikku while in Mascot, which targets all enemies. It takes 40 AP to learn and 12 MP to cast.

Final Fantasy XIIEdit

Shear is a Technick that lowers the target's Magick Resist by 10% and can be used repeatedly. No enemy is immune to it, but it has a fairly low accuracy of only 33%. Shear can be bought in Rabanastre, Nalbina and Jahara for 3,600 gil and it takes 35 LP to unlock on the License Board.

In the International Zodiac Job System version Shear costs 50 LP and can be used by the Breaker and the Archer and also the Time Mage (after acquiring Zeromus first).

Final Fantasy XIIIEdit

Deshell

Deshell is an ability available to the Saboteur paradigm role that lowers an enemy's Magic Defense by 89%. It is classified as a debuffing spell and it can be inflicted by itself or to cancel an enemy's Shell status. It costs 1 ATB gauge segment to cast and is one of Vanille's main and first Saboteur abilities.

Deshell is learned by Lightning and Sazh on Crystarium Stage 7, and by Fang on Stage 8. Upgraded version is Deshellga, which is an area of effect spell and costs 3 ATB segments. Deshellga is learned by Vanille and Hope on Stage 7 and on Stage 9 by Lightning. Snow is the only character not to learn any Deshell abilities.

Final Fantasy XIII-2Edit

Deshell is an ability once again available to Saboteur role, but now it inflicts Wound damage to the enemy as well as reducing its Magic Defense. It costs 1 ATB gauge segment to cast, and is learnable by Serah and Noel both. The improved version, Deshellga, is only available and Saboteur monsters.

Final Fantasy TacticsEdit

Mind Break is used by Knights, learned for 250 JP, which reduces the target's Magick power. This reduces the target's Magical Attack stat by 3. Knights also have Magic Break which reduces the target's MP by approximately half(rounded up). Mind Break and Magic Break are learned for 250 JP.

Final Fantasy Tactics AdvanceEdit

Mental Break is used by both Soldiers and Warriors, and when used, lowers an opponent's Magic Attack. In the North American version, it is known as the ability Mindbreak. It can be learned from the Buster Sword for 200 AP.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the RiftEdit

Raptors have an ability known as Mind Crush that deals damage and lowers the target's Resistance. Raptors learn it for 250 AP from the Falchion.
