Mateus (Summon)
From Final Fantasy Wiki
- "Scion of darkness ruling and protecting those who live in the underworld, in opposition to Lahabrea the Abyssal Celebrant and scion of light. In the course of his rule, he submitted to avarice, and the darkness took his heart, transforming him until he was both evil and corrupt. Then in his cowardice did he bind a Goddess of the Demesne of Ice, and using her as a living shield, he challenged the gods. Defeated before their might, he fell screaming into the depths of hell, there to be imprisoned for eternity."
- —Clan Primer Bio
Mateus the Corrupt (背徳の皇帝マティウス Haitoku no Koutei Matiusu lit. The Corrupt Emperor Mateus) is the second Esper obtained in the world of Ivalice. The Esper of Ice, he represents the Zodiac sign of Pisces, the Fish. This is reflected by the fact that Mateus has fish-like aspects to his appearance. From his power of Ice, his color sign is Blue. He is also referred to as the Meena Ascendant, which is the Sanskrit name of its Zodiac sign as used in Jyotish (Hindu) astrology.
Mateus' name is taken directly from the Emperor Mateus from Final Fantasy II. His backstory also has very similar elements to the Emperor's. The blue-skinned ice goddess bound to his form recalls Shiva. But it is, in fact, a recalling of the moment in Final Fantasy II where he kidnaps Princess Hilda, a Norse name by the way, and thus the ice property of the goddess. The gods he challenges are the representation of Firion and his friends, thus stating how "historical" events become legends with time (or legends are told as historical events).

Mateus is found in the Stilshrine of Miriam, guarding the sword left there by King Raithwall. He is the second of the five Espers obtained during the main storyline.
[edit] Attacks
Flash-Freeze: An Ice Elemental attack. Like your standard higher level Blizzard spell.
Frostwave: An Ice Elemental attack, and Mateus' ultimate attack. Mateus dives under the water and twirls his trident, charging up a blue aura of ice. He then throws his trident, forcing it to penetrate the surface causing a giant pillar of water to rise due to the force of the throw. Because of the icy aura of the trident, the water pillar immediately freezes and gives off cold air, making the player's screen "freeze" too. The screen shatters and all enemies in range receive damage.

[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Mateus returns as a Scion, along with the other Espers, in Final Fantasy Tactics A2. Mateus can be called by the Corsage of Corruption. His Wrath, Frostwave, deals heavy Ice damage to all foes.
