EtymologyEdit

Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin. It also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the ascendant of Portuguese "Matéria".

In Japanese, Materia's name is pronounced in a similar fashion to that of the magic orbs from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. However, the first syllable in her name is held for an extra mora, as indicated by the (chōonpu?) following (ma?).
