The Malboro is an enemy from Final Fantasy VII. It is found in the outdoor areas of Gaea's Cliff, and later in the Graveyard area of Northern Cave. It is also fought in the seventh round of the Battle Square after the player acquires the Highwind and Cloud Strife rejoins the party. BattleEdit

Malboros appear alone. It uses the Ice-elemental attack Frozen Beam; Bio2, which may inflict poison; and its signature move, Bad Breath, which can be acquired as an Enemy Skill. Malboro uses Bad Breath with an increased chance at under 25% HP.

Bad Breath attempts to inflict a profusion of bad status effects on all targets: Sleep, Poison, Confuse, Silence, Frog and Small. It uses this attack three times per battle.

Malboro is weak against Water.

StrategyEdit

The Confusion and Sleep components of Bad Breath can affect the entire party, and the only way to break out of them, other than another party member using Remedy or Esuna, is to be struck with a physical attack; however, Malboro's attacks are magical. Thus, unless a party member or members have immunity from accessories or Added Effect Materia, getting struck with Bad Breath can spell the party's doom. The Ribbon found at the Gaea's Cliff immunizes the wearer to status ailments.

Casting Aqualung is effective. L4 Suicide can also end the battle quickly. Since the Malboro uses Bad Breath with an increased chance at under 25% HP, L4 Suicide is also useful for learning this skill, which can otherwise take a while for the Malboro to use.

EtymologyEdit

"Malboro" may derive from the Japanese onomatopoeia boro, the sound of an upset stomach. Their name is most likely derived from the Latin and Greek words mal (meaning bad) and boros (meaning breath), a reference to their infamous attack. The name could also be a reference to Marlboro Cigarettes, since the creatures often spew horrid fumes.
