Switches defense with WallChange, so use Flare and Ultima. He'll use his own Ultima at the end, so have at least one person ready with Life 3. Dies at 0 MP.
Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Magic Master is a boss in Final Fantasy VI found at the top of the Cultists' Tower after obtaining the Soul of Thamasa.

After the Soul of Thamasa is retrieved, the Cult of Kefka, apparently having deduced the party's attempts at stealing the treasure, rush up to the top and surround them, demanding in a monotone voice to return the treasure belonging to Lord Kefka. The Magic Master then arrives at the top behind them, then floats around the roof before landing at the party's spot.

BattleEdit

It attacks with Fira, Blizzara, Thundara, Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Bio, Silence, and Death, and can do massive damage with its high magic power. Thankfully, all of its attacks can be reflected, so Reflect Rings will make the party virtually invincible. Equipping armor that absorbs Fire, Ice, and/or Lightning-elemental damage will negate most of its offense as well. Whenever the Magic Master is attacked, it uses Barrier Change to change its weakness and immunities. Thus the player should ignore its elemental immunities and use non-elemental spells such as Flare and Ultima. Quake (when combined with Gaia Gears) is useful for healing characters under reflect status. When defeated, the Magic Master always uses Ultima, so the player must either cast Reraise on the party, be at an absurdly high level, or jump out of range using a well-timed Quetzalli summon to survive. Casting Libra to periodically to assess when he will die and cast Ultima is advised.

A simple and safe way to defeat the Magic Master is to cast Berserk on it. This will stop the Magic Master from changing its weaknesses and force it to use only physical attacks, which hit for about 500 HP of damage. This gives the player all the time needed to whittle down its HP and prepare Reraise to survive Ultima. In addition, after Reraise is cast on the party, if a party member knows Vanish, then they can use said spell to nullify the boss's physical attacks as well, making the battle virtually impossible to lose.

A rather passive strategy of defeating Magic Master is to equip the entire party with Reflect Rings, enter the battle and immediately cast Reraise on the party. Magic Master should attack the player with a magic spell which will naturally be reflected. However, the player will notice that the Magic Master will not cast Barrier Change. This is because the Magic Master will not cast Barrier Change unless the player has attacked it at least once, thus leading him to abusing its use through the battle. The player should then defend throughout the entire battle watching the Magic Master bring his own doom upon himself, then onto the party once he is defeated casting Ultima. By that time, the player's party should have Reraise status.

Another way to stop Magic Master from casting Ultima is to damage its MP with Rasp and Osmose, which will kill it when its MP reaches 0, but considering Magic Master's high amount of MP, this would take at least half an hour to perform. Interestingly, Magic Master won't have the boss death animation if it is killed this way.
