The Magi 魔導士, also known as Mage Knight and Mage Warrior, were a group who took part in the War of the Magi, 1,000 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy VI. They were the humans who learned how to wield magic. After the war ended, they found themselves persecuted and killed by "normal" humans, and so fled to Crescent Island, where they founded the town of Thamasa, whose descendants guarded its secrets carefully.

Template:Sideicon The Magi (魔導士, Madōshi?), also known as Mage Knight and Mage Warrior, were a group who took part in the War of the Magi, 1,000 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy VI. They were the humans who learned how to wield magic. After the war ended, they found themselves persecuted and killed by "normal" humans, and so fled to Crescent Island, where they founded the town of Thamasa, whose descendants guarded its secrets carefully.

As the playable characters become masters of magic themselves, they effectively become Magi as well, except for Gogo and Umaro, while Gogo cannot equip espers and depend on the other Magi for using Magic, Gogo is still human because S/he cannot learn magic, only using it from others, and Umaro cannot learn Magic at all. But the distinction quickly becomes moot after Kefka's final defeat, when magic disappears from the world.
