I'll continue. I must. If I give up now... I could do anything I wanted to, and yet... Even if I was with you, I could never forget.
—Yuna vows to continue her pilgrimage, at Macalania Spring

Macalania Woods is a magical forest in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 filled with springs. The ancestral protectors of Macalania are the three races of musicians: a tall, blue-colored bird-like race with harps, a short race with saxophone-like instruments, and a rotund race with drums. The Guado are exiled to the woods in Final Fantasy X-2. The woods are a junction point for several other locations, being connected to the Thunder Plains at the southern end, to Bevelle in the west, and to the Calm Lands in the east, and Lake Macalania in the north.

Final Fantasy XEdit

Yuna & Tidus Macalania Pond

Yuna and Tidus in Macalania Spring.

The party passes through the glittering, maze-like forest on their way to Macalania Temple. Auron recalls an encounter with the Spherimorph and obtains the first Jecht's Sphere. Later, the party hides out in the woods after escaping Bevelle. Yuna is torn over whether to continue the pilgrimage or not and goes off alone to the forest spring. Tidus follows her and tries to persuade her to quit her journey and apologizes for all the times he used to talk about going to his Zanarkand, thinking he only made her sad. Yuna says it wasn't so, and though she contemplates over quitting she finds herself unable to and bursts into tears. Tidus comforts her and the two share a kiss in the spring.

Final Fantasy X-2Edit

Macalania forest

Yuna in Macalania Forest in Final Fantasy X-2.

Although there is no requirement to visit Macalania during the direct story of Final Fantasy X-2, several optional missions are available to gain items, dresspheres, and even change the fate of the inhabitants of the Woods.

The woods look much the same as they did in Final Fantasy X, but are dying due to the fayth at Macalania Temple fading away. The Guado have sought refuge here after being forced to leave Guadosalam by the vengeful Ronso. Completing several missions involving the Ronso and Guado will result in the Guado returning to Guadosalam joined by the musicians, but regardless of what choices the player makes, the woods will eventually fade away, although not shown in-game.

Yuna also confronts some emotional issues when she visits the Spring and fondly recalls her time there with Tidus.

Spoilers end here.

QuestsEdit

Final Fantasy XEdit

Butterfly HuntEdit

Butterfly-game-2

How to solve the first two versions of the butterfly hunt game, from the game's Ultimania guide.

Shortly after arriving in Macalania, the party will come across a bird-like creature with a harp, called Borra, who will tell about the game in a bit of a riddle.

To start the game, the player must find and touch one of the rainbow colored butterflies scattered throughout the woods. Several can be found, each triggering the minigame in that particular section. The minigame must be played to obtain the Saturn Sigil for Kimahri's Celestial Weapon, the Spirit Lance.

The minigame can be made easier by using pause. The player can use this to spot the location of next red/blue butterfly (if they are up or down) and easily avoid the red butterflies.

The RulesEdit

The player must collect the blue butterflies while avoiding the red ones. When the game begins, a transparent treasure chest will appear somewhere on the screen. Each time the player collects a blue butterfly, the chest becomes more and more corporeal. One must collect all seven within the time limit and the chest becomes solid, with the prize inside.

  • Once the game starts, all random encounters are suspended. Even after the event is over, win or lose, random encounters will remain suspended until the player leaves the area.
  • Touching a red butterfly triggers a battle composed of fiends found in Macalania Woods. However, they cannot be escaped from, and their Defense and Magic Defense are increased.
    • Specifically, all fiends in Macalania Woods have these stats by default as either 1 or 120; those that are 1 will be increased to 90, while those that are 120 will be increased to 170.
  • Touching a red butterfly costs the player a few seconds of time as Tidus bends down to pick it up before the battle starts.
  • Once the hunt is over, the player must leave the area and return to reset the minigame. If, however, one collected all seven butterflies but accidentally left the area before collecting the prize, it will vanish and one must try again.
    • It is very easy to accidentally leave the area when completing the central catch.
  • If the time runs out the player loses and is transported back to the start point. If the player wins, they remain where they were at the game's end.
PrizesEdit
Game moment Time (secs) Prize - Central Prize - North
Before Battle with Spherimorph 40 MP Sphere Ether
After Battle with Spherimorph 30 Megalixir x2 Elixir x2
After gaining Airship 30 Teleport Sphere/Saturn Sigil* Teleport Sphere/Saturn Sigil*
  • After mastering both areas the player earns the Saturn Sigil; the first prize is the Teleport Sphere. It doesn't matter in which order the areas are played.

Meeting WantzEdit

The appearance of Wantz in the Macalania Woods is missable. To have Wantz appear the player must speak to him at Mt. Gagazet, after which he will be found at the entrance to the woods from the Thunder Plains, after obtaining the airship, and then completing the mandatory visit to Bevelle's Highbridge.
