Yuna vows to continue her pilgrimage, at Macalania Spring

Macalania Woods is a magical forest in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 filled with pyreflies and springs that attract them. The ancestral protectors of Macalania are the three races of musicians: a tall, blue-colored bird-like race with harps, a short race with saxophone-like instruments, and a rotund race with drums. The Guado are exiled to the woods in Final Fantasy X-2. The woods are a junction point for several other locations, being connected to the Thunder Plains at the southern end, to Bevelle in the west, and to the Calm Lands in the east, and Lake Macalania in the north.

Although there is no requirement to visit Macalania during Final Fantasy X-2, several optional missions are available to gain items, dresspheres, and even change the fate of the woods' inhabitants.

Final Fantasy X[]

Yuna & Tidus Macalania Pond

Yuna and Tidus in Macalania Spring.

Yuna's party passes through the glittering, maze-like forest on their way to Macalania Temple. They encounter Barthello who has lost Dona. Auron tells him to keep his cool and guard his emotions, then guard Dona, which Barthello agrees, thanks Auron, and leaves to continue searching.

Reaching the northern part of the woods, Auron slices a tree branch to open a path. Showing a pond, Auron explains to Tidus that pyrefly-infused water such as this is what spheres are made of, absorbing and preserving the memories of people. A Spherimorph appears and battles the party. After they defeat the fiend, they obtain the first Jecht's Sphere.

Later, the party hides out in the woods after escaping Bevelle. Yuna is torn over whether to continue the pilgrimage and goes off alone to the forest spring. Tidus follows her and tries to persuade her to quit her journey, apologizing for all the times he used to talk about going to his Zanarkand, thinking he only made her sad. Yuna says it wasn't so, and though she contemplates over quitting she finds herself unable to and bursts into tears. Tidus comforts her and the two share a kiss in the spring.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Macalania forest

Yuna in Macalania Forest.

The woods are dying due to the fayth at Macalania Temple fading away. The Guado have sought refuge here after being forced to leave Guadosalam by the vengeful Ronso. The Gullwings can meet the local musicians who explain that the woods will be no more. O'aka XXIII is on the run from the Al Bhed since he cannot pay his debt. The Gullwings find him and can take him to their airship. The Gullwings can also hire the musicians for Tobli's show on the Moonflow. Yuna confronts some emotional issues when she visits the spring and fondly recalls her time there with Tidus.

Spoilers end here.

The Guado sought shelter in these woods, but the Ronso hunted down every last man, woman, and child... Though their souls should rightly be stirring, I do not sense a thing. Perhaps they resigned themselves to their unhappy fate and departed willingly for the Farplane... Forgive me, I cannot bear to continue.

Other media[]

In Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, there is a trade material called "Macalania Timber". The item's description mentions the wood contains Pyrefly extract.

Behind the scenes[]

A lot of effort was put into the scene where Tidus and Yuna swim in the spring in the woods. Scenario Writer Kazushige Nojima originally wrote the scene differently, with Yuna subtly objecting whenever Tidus tried to turn the conversation positive, with him eventually stopping her by kissing her. Assistant writer Daisuke Watanabe changed it to the final version, where Yuna first enthusiastically goes along with Tidus's ideal for them to live carefree, and then falls sad upon realizing it is a dream that is out of reach, and Tidus soothes her.[1]
