Ffxi maat
Heh heh heh. Listen! You can hear that right? It's the sound of my blood-a-boiling!
—Maat

Maat (マート, Māto?) is a non-playable Hume monk in Final Fantasy XI. He is a very spry old man who can be found in Ru'Lude Gardens. He maintains his fighting stance day and night.

StoryEdit

Maat lived in what became the Grand Duchy of Jeuno in a time when it was merely a fishing village. His rigorous training allowed him to master all forms of combat. By the dawn of the Crystal War Jeuno had grown substantially and Maat was a prominent figure in the nascent Duchy. Rather than staying to defend the city, however, he wandered the countryside as a freelance, joining the ranks of whatever army most impressed him. He was sometimes accompanied on the battlefield by Degenhard, his old friend and rival. After the war he apparently returned to Jeuno without incident.

Breaking LimitsEdit

Adventurers seek Maat's counsel in the Ru'Lude Gardens when they first reach level 50, the game's natural level cap. He sends the player on an errand which, once completed, increases the cap to 55. Maat assigns subsequent tasks that raise the cap to 60, 65, and eventually 70. At this point Maat dispenses with simple chores and, assuming the player is not using a Job introduced after the Chains of Promathia expansion, challenges the player to a fight. The prize for overcoming him is the privilege of leveling to 75, the highest level available before June 2010.

In battle Maat assumes his opponent's job and adds its abilities to his own hand-to-hand techniques. While adventurers are barred from using their Support Jobs, Maat has no qualms about combining his monkish talents with a second class. The player's primary objective is to reduce his hit points to near-zero. Some jobs have an alternate method of victory: white mages can impress Maat by curing themselves for a certain amount of damage and thieves can end the contest by successfully stealing something from him.

Maat has no interest in the jobs added by the Treasures of Aht Urhgan or Wings of the Goddess expansions. Adventurers with these vocations have their own unique opportunities for reaching level 75.

Maat's CapEdit

Once a player has unlocked a level cap they may progress beyond it with any job. It is therefore only necessary to fight Maat once. He welcomes rematches, however, and can be faced with the fifteen jobs released before the Chains of Promathia expansion. If an adventurer defeats him with all of these Maat will offer a head-slot item called Maat's Cap as a reward. Though it is not the most practical garment for all situations, the cap allows teleportation to Jeuno and is a notable status symbol.

EtymologyEdit

Maat or ma'at, also spelled māt or mayet, was the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation.

TriviaEdit

  • Maat came in fourteenth place in a Final Fantasy XI NPC Popularity Contest held by Square Enix in June 2013. Current players of the game were given an opportunity to vote for their favorite NPC and share ideas for stories involving these characters.
