He is hired by Cardinal Delacroix to retrieve the Taurus auracite from Besrudio Bunansa. His men capture Besrudio, but his son Mustadio escapes with the Stone and is rescued by Ramza Beoulve. Ramza and Mustadio later return to the Bunansas' hometown of the Clockwork City of Goug where Baert captures Mustadio and confronts Ramza.

Baert threatens to have Besrudio killed if Mustadio does not divulge the location of the Stone. Mustadio tells Baert it is in the chimney where Ramza is standing. Ramza retrieves a shiny Stone and gives it to Baert. Baert leaves, instructing his thugs to attack Ramza and Mustadio. He takes the Stone to Delacroix only to discover it is a fake.

An impatient Delacroix hires Goffard Gaffgarion to deal with Ramza and Mustadio. As Gaffgarion leaves the room, Delacroix tells Baert that he must take responsibility for his failure and kills him.
