Lucrecia Crescent

Lucrecia (ルクレツィア・クレシェント, Rukuretsia Kureshento) is a non-playable character from Final Fantasy VII. Though she is a kind and beautiful woman, a fatal flaw of her character was to focus too much on her mistakes and at times, to act too impulsively. Her ambition was one of her greatest drives, yet one of her greatest short comings.

[edit] Storyline

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

She was once a Shin-Ra scientist working as an assistant to Vincent's father Grimoire Valentine and after that on the Jenova Project along with Gast and Hojo. Flashbacks strongly imply that she was at one time romantically involved with Vincent Valentine, then a member of the Turks. However, she eventually rejected Vincent as a result of the guilt she held for her role in the death of Vincent's father.

She then entered a relationship with the insane Hojo, eventually marrying him. Lucrecia had become pregnant, and Hojo used her (apparently with her consent) as an experiment subject, injecting her with Jenova cells. She subsequently gave birth to Sephiroth, but the child was taken away without Lucrecia even being allowed to hold him. Hojo either leaves her, or she leaves him afterwards. Either way Hojo is completely unaffected emotionally. Thereafter, due to the Jenova cells in her body Lucrecia was unable to truly die.

She lingered on in the Crystal Cave until the events of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. A major event in Dirge of Cerberus, the unification of Lucrecia's data, it is speculated she had feelings for Vincent. This is made abundantly clear throughout the game, but even more so during the seemingly random words flashing across the screen. Assembling them into sentences will reveal, "I loved Vincent with all my heart" and "Please don't die on me, I love you!" The latter is most likely a reference to the events which transpired between Vincent Valentine and Hojo.

[edit] Trivia

  • Lucrecia is a Spanish name and is a reference to the mythical Roman figure Lucretia, who was infamously raped by Sextus Tarquinius. It is a matter of some debate among fans whether this allusion is a hint that Lucrecia's relationship with Hojo was less consensual than it appeared, or is simply meant to emphasize the perverse nature of Sephiroth's conception.
