This is a list of plot holes, goofs, and discrepancies found in the Final Fantasy series.

[edit] Plot Holes

A plot hole is a contradiction in the game's plot.

[edit] Final Fantasy

  • Garland claims he created a time loop by having the Four Fiends send him into the past, at which point he sends their past incarnations into the future. However, when the party visits the Chaos Shrine in the past, the Four Fiends are fought there. A possible explanation may be that Garland simply has not sent them forward yet. The Fiends can also be fought multiple times if the player backtracks over the spot where the Fiends attack them, so it may also be the Fiends fought in the past are apparitions of some sort.

[edit] Final Fantasy II

  • In the Soul of Rebirth present in the later remakes, the deceased characters view the ending from their perspective. However, there are some inexplicable changes, such as the main characters no longer seeing Josef's ghost, and Ricard having some semblance of kin show up to say thanks.

[edit] Final Fantasy III

  • There is a contradiction towards the story of how the four children came to be. According to Cid, the children were not originally from this world, stating that ten years prior to the game, he was ferrying people to and from the continents when an unknown evil struck, causing his ship to be destroyed. This contradicts what Unei says at one point of the game: that the Surface World had been closed off for a thousand years.

[edit] Final Fantasy V

  • Sourcebooks of the original Super Famicom version indicate that Enuo's soul was one of several evil spirits sealed in a great tree in the Great Forest of Moore shortly after his destruction. Years later, the Advance port shows that his essence lived on in the Sealed Temple. What's more, one of the NPCs in the Phantom Village explicitly states that Enuo was consumed by the Void 1000 years prior. Either Final Fantasy V Advance is not the canon version, or this is retconned information.

[edit] Final Fantasy VI

  • After the three-party split, the characters happen to meet back at Narshe at the same time; however, Sabin's trip through the Veldt, Doma Castle, Phantom Train, and Barren Falls should have logically taken much more time than Terra Branford's trip on the Lethe River and Locke's infiltration of Figaro. However, this can be explained since the game never actually states how much time passes between Terra, Edgar and Banon's arrival and the appearance of the rest of the party.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII

  • Though the Weapons awaken to combat Sephiroth and Meteor, once his barrier is destroyed none of the remaining Weapons attack him. Indeed, one of Ultimate Weapon's favorite places to hover (when the player is pursuing it) is right over the North Crater. It is conceivable, however, that this was due to the Weapons' inability to effectively engage Sephiroth himself, who had become vastly more powerful than Ultimate Weapon.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

  • During the film, the characters seem to travel between Midgar and the Forgotten Capital in a matter of hours, when the Forgotten Capital is actually located on the northern continent, which would seem like a difficult trip to make by bike.

  • Despite officially being killed in action, Shinra continues to send Zack new missions.

[edit] Final Fantasy VIII

  • Time Compression occurs, yet there remain students willing to play cards. (One might assume, though, that in an existence where time has been focused into a singularity, there is not much else to do.)
  • Similar to the above example, another person is willing to sit in the middle of the room during the prison break offering to play a card game.
  • Although during the SeeD exam, Squall and his classmates show no difficulty in defeating the Galbadians, at several points during the game, they are shown to consider the Galbadian soldiers a threat - the TV Station, the Prison, etc.
  • Though her goal during the game has been to capture Ellone, while possessing Rinoa on the space station, Ultimecia walks right past her. However, due to her seeming inability to completely control Rinoa, it is possible that she was in no position to abduct Ellone at that point, anyway.
  • After the battle at Galbadia Garden Edea transfers all her powers to Rinoa, and is no longer able to use Sorceress Power as a result. However, Edea joins the party soon after the transfer and is obviously able to still use her Sorceress Power, between using Blizzard Palm and her Limit Break: Ice Strike.
  • It is never properly explained why Rinoa, who has had her Sorceress Powers for only a couple days and is physically younger and more inexperienced than the other Sorceresses, is harder for Ultimecia to control than Edea or Adel, who have both had their powers much longer.
  • The Ragnarok suffers from multiple plot holes, the very first being its very appearance in the game itself. If the spacecraft had in fact lost power 17 years prior to the game, its incredibly unlikely the machine would still be hovering anywhere around the moon or Adel's Tomb, in fact it would have been much more likely that it would have either crashed to the moon or to the planet, or simply drifted off into space over the course of nearly two decades. Its appearance is more like a deus ex machina, an improbable solution to save Squall and Rinoa from simply drifting off into space themselves.
  • In addition to that, the Ragnarok had been drifting for nearly two decides, however when Squall and Rinoa board it, not only is the ship still fully operational, but still has plenty of oxygen for them to breath, which over so many years, especially with monsters living in the ship itself, should have depleted its air supply long ago. This wouldn't have been such a glaring plot hole, except that right before they enter the ship, the entire obstacle they were going through was the fact they were running out of oxygen.

[edit] Final Fantasy X-2

  • For unexplained reasons, when LeBlanc dons the Songstress dressphere in the beginning of the game, she takes on the exact physical appearance of Yuna, right down to the outfit Yuna wears as a Songstress, and, presumably, Yuna's voice. As donning a dressphere usually gives the wearer their own unique outfit and as they usually retain their own physical appearance while doing so, it is unknown why LeBlanc is able to impersonate Yuna. It is requested by Yuna in the early cut scene however, that LeBlanc return her Garment Grid, which may be the reason (although still unexplained as to how Garment Grids alter physical appearance) she looked like Yuna.

[edit] Dissidia Final Fantasy

  • In Destiny Odyssey VIII, Ultimecia takes on the appearence of the Goddess of Harmony, Cosmos, to influence Squall into travelling alone. This is supposed to be reference to how Ultimecia could take over other people's body in Final Fantasy VIII, as seen through possessing Edea and Rinoa, even showing herself transparent through Cosmos's body. However what body Ultimecia is actually possessing is unknown, being a Goddess it can be assumed that Ultimecia would not have the power to possess Cosmos herself, so it is never revealed how Ultimecia is able to take on Cosmos's form. One alternative could be that Ultimecia is simply mimicing Comos's shape, however the transperancy leads the viewer to believe she is using a power similiar to her possession from her original game.
  • Throughout the game the characters constantly move through the same 10 arenas, however only have minimal contact with one another. In addition, despite the fact the forces of Chaos seem to have steady strongholds set up in Old Chaos Shrine and The Rift the areas always appear empty when the heroes wander through them.
  • Although each arena appears completely closed off, most lacking any definitive doors or portals, characters appear to have little to no problems crossing between them freely on foot. This, however, may be explained that the characters may be passing through portals of the Void as that appears to be a major plot device throughout Dissidia.
  • There appears to be major discrepencies between the appearence of arenas and their actual sizes in the game. It is described that the areas are just shards of the worlds themselves, however areas like The Rift show additional areas of the void that are inaccessible, and the Lunar Subterrane actually has the entire Blue Planet in the background, although obviously the Blue Planet cannot be accessed.

A goof is a minor continuity issue or visual mistake in the game. It usually doesn't affect the game's plot.

[edit] Final Fantasy III

  • After giving Cid's wife an Elixir he will tell you to press the candle behind him and jump out of the way to the right to give the party access. However, if you continue to speak to him, he will again jump to the right each time. Eventually if you talk to him enough he will jump clear out of his own house!
  • Whenever the party gains an extra character they will walk beind the main character's sprite, however if you watch how they move the extra character always seems to have trouble keeping up with the player's movement and will constantly skip forward to keep behind.

[edit] Final Fantasy IV

  • Upon reaching Troia, it is possible for the player to go speak to Edward before talking to the Epopts. When speaking to Edward, Cecil will tell him of their quest to retrieve the Earth Crystal from the Dark Elf. However, this is impossible if choosing to speak to Edward first, since the Cecil hasn't learned of the Dark Elf yet from the Epopts.
  • A person in Agart states that they saw "something red" descending into the crater to the Underworld, even before you've opened the crater.
  • It is stated multiple times that airships require special modifications to fly in the heat of the Underworld. However, the player is able to use the Enterprise to carry the Hovercraft into the underworld, where is operates normally. This is likely just an oversight by the developers however, as there is no use for the Hovercraft in the underworld and thus it was obviously not meant to be taken there by the player.

  • Despite Porom's conversation with Ceodore in Mysidia, or the fact that everyone calls him by the title of "Prince" in the town of Baron, Kain does not realize that Ceodore is Cecil's son until they reach Baron Castle through the waterway.

  • In Tifa's bar there's a neon sign that clearly says "TEXAS," the name of a state in the real-world country of the United States.
  • Tseng appeared to have been killed by Sephiroth in the Temple of the Ancients. His death seemed to have been confirmed by Elena when she blamed Cloud for "doin' in (her) boss" and Tseng is never seen in the game again (unless the player does not visit Gongaga and witnesses the scene with him and Scarlet. However Tseng later appears alive and well in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. It was later revealed that Elena's line was a mistranslation.
  • In the original Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII, Aerith's name is translated as Aeris in the English version by SCEA. This is because the Japanese language doesn't have the "th" sound, and the closest thing is "su" the semi-equivalent of the English-language "s" sound- otherwise known as "su". Pronouncing the Japanese characters phonetically produces the audible word "Earisu". The translators were mistaken when they spelled her name in English, and took the "su" sound in her Japanese name to mean an "s." However, since Kingdom Hearts, her name has been translated as Aerith in her appearances such as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, meaning that the Aeris name has been retconned. Similarly, Sephiroth would be pronounced as "Sefirosu", so the translation of his name could have just as easily ended up being something along the lines of "Sephiros".
  • Whenever Sephiroth is shown wielding his sword in non-FMV scenes or outside of battle he wields it in a right-handed manner, despite being left handed. In all other cases, he wields in a left-handed manner.
  • In the flashback scene when Barret is shown getting his arm shot by Scarlet, both Barret and Dyne's right hands are shot. In the scene right after that, Barret states that Dyne had a gun grafted onto his left hand. Assuming that Dyne didn't just decide to cut off his other hand for the gun, this is a mistake.
  • The player was able to use only one snowboard, despite having three party members.
  • During one of the CGI cutscenes, Aerith and Tifa flee in a car (while Cloud uses a motorbike). If you look carefully at the logo on the side of the car, the name of the company that produced it is "Motor Midgal's Group" which is a typo as it should read "Motor Midgar's Group." This mistake is probably due to the fact that the Japanese pronounce the letters L and R the same.
  • During the scene where Sephiroth stabs Aerith with his sword, his gloves disappear for a few seconds.
  • When Aerith is first seen at the altar, she is facing the stairs with her back to the railing. However, when Sephiroth comes down with his sword, both he and Aerith have their backs to the stairs. Once the FMV ends, they are again facing the stairs.
  • During Aerith's death scene, Aerith is shown to be kneeling on a checkerboard patterned floor, yet moments later, the checkerboard pattern is gone. The floor is checkerboard-less in the actual gameplay area as well.
  • Also during Aerith's death scene, Aerith is stabbed through the chest, yet there is no blood. However, some legends (unrelated to Final Fantasy) state that the Masamune is so sharp it does not draw blood. But the truth is that there is no blood because of ESRB's Teen rating; while Final Fantasy VII had a darker-toned storyline than its predecessors, the game developers did not want to go so far as to include blood, for it might have given the game a restricted Mature rating, a content rating that no Final Fantasy game has ever attained.Despite this there is a trail of blood when Sephiroth kills everyone in the shinra building on disk one.
    • More recently, Crisis Core depicted blood, but only in the ending, and at a minimum to still stay within the censorship standards of the Teen rating. Also, in Advent Children Complete, Cloud bleeds considerably in his battle with Sephiroth, although there is no blood in the original, even when Sephiroth stabbed Cloud in the shoulder; the Complete version was unrated, while the original was rated PG-13, the MPAA's equivalent of the ESRB's Teen rating.
  • Again, during Aerith's death scene, Cloud lets Aerith's body sink into the center of a deep lake, where Cloud is standing next to her on the lake floor. If it was a deep lake, Cloud would be unable to stand there.
  • Once again, during Aerith's death scene, when Aerith is stabbed in the FMV, the ribbon from her hair falls out, along with the Holy Materia. However, in the next scene, when Cloud holds her, the ribbon is still in her hair.
  • Lastly, during Aerith's death scene, Cloud vanishes when showing Aerith sink.
  • During the Rocket Launch FMV, the text on the rocket (Shinra No. 26) is reversed.
  • The Sister Ray cannon is not aimed at North Cave, although an FMV shows it hitting the correct target. This is known as it is possible to 'aim' the Highwind in the direction the cannon points- it is several degrees off.
  • If the player recruits Vincent after killing Hojo, when Vincent asks if he will see Hojo, Cloud replies "Probably...", despite knowing that he is dead. (However this could be seen as Cloud not wanting to admit to Vincent that he had robbed him of his chance of revenge)
  • At the 66th floor of the Shinra building on disk one if a player enters this area can watch the Heads of shinra walk into their meeting.If a player leaves and then returns they are reset and walk back to their chairs.
  • at the 65th floor of the shinra building a player can see a bottom left piece of the scale model missing even if they have placed every piece in but if they enter the room the piece appears in place.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

  • During the first chase scene, one of the Shadow Creepers seem to run on air instead of the ground.
  • When Yazoo jumps/flips over Cloud's motorcycle in the opening chase sequence, the way his motorcycle is flipping through the air changes slightly between shots.
  • Also during the same chase scene, when the Shadow Creepers dematerialize, Cloud's motorcycle goes "forward", but a part of one of the Remains' bike is shown as if it's going "backwards" (specifically, the bike is in front of Cloud's, but the part of the bike shown is the front part, instead of the back).
  • When Kadaj kneels in front of Rufus Shinra, his sword goes through the floor.
  • Cloud finds Tifa lying on the flower-patch in the church, after the fight with Loz. At first she has her leather gloves on, then the next shot her hands are bare, and again in the next shot she has her gloves again. Alternatively, it could have been a subtle reference to a similar occurrence in Final Fantasy VII featuring Sephiroth.
  • Just before the fight, in one frame, Loz's Velvet Nightmare is missing in its holster. During the fight, it is there again.
  • Just before the battle in Forgotten Capital, Cloud picks up the main blade and one of the back blades from his bike. During the battle, the back blade is now the front blade. This is corrected in Advent Children Complete and curiously absent during the identical concept scenes of the original Advent Children.
  • During the Bahamut attack scene, in some of the wide shots above the city, you can see some of the people (All computer generated) running "through" each other.
  • When the giant crowd has gathered around the memorial before the Bahamut attack scene, you can see some of the CGI people are using the exact same body animations.
  • After Reno and Rude were knocked unconscious due to Bahamut's Tera Flare, the children they carry are missing and the people rising behind them are the two unnamed civilians who first witnessed Bahamut materializing. This has been corrected in Advent Children Complete showing the kids they brought rising and walking limply away instead.
  • During the bike chase towards the end, as Cloud and Loz/Yazoo crash through the security gate, you can see that the lettering is misspelled: "Authorized Parsonnel Only." It should read "Authorized Personnel Only." This is corrected in Advent Children Complete
  • In the final battle of Cloud VS Sephiroth, when the Shinra HQ is collapsing, in the final shot of the building collapsing, one of the pieces of rubble is not there for about one or two frames, then it suddenly appears.
  • Also in the final battle, Cloud engages Sephiroth in an extended swordfight while the building collapses. He jumps away and combines his swords. In the very next scene, he does so again. This may be explained by Cloud not combining it the first time, but only slashing at a same area.
  • Just before it, when Cloud separates the front sword from the main blade, the front sword goes "through" the main blade's guard.
  • After Aerith heals Cloud, he finds himself surrounded by children in the pool of water in Aerith's church, but when he stands up he is completely dry.
  • During the fight between Loz and Tifa when he lifts her up a part of her body turns invisible.
  • The Bahamut materia Kadaj uses in Midgar centre is the wrong colour. The materia he uses is white, whereas in the game, summon materia is red.

[edit] Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII

  • The single sleeve that Cloud tore off his left arm at the end of Advent Children is now back for unknown reasons. It's possible that he merely sewed it back on.

[edit] Final Fantasy VIII

  • Irvine is seen to shoot Sorceress Edea from front-on during the parade sequence, however moments later, when Squall drives up to her float, the float is facing directly away from their shooting position. Besides the obvious change of direction in the way the float is facing, the backing of Edea's throne would have made shooting her from that angle impossible.
  • In the third Laguna Dream in Winhill a map is visible on the back wall of the Flower Restaurant. Interestingly, the map is not of the world of Final Fantasy VIII but of our own world. The map is no longer present if the player returns to Winhill with Squall later in the game. This may be just an Easter Egg, though.
  • The first line of Bahamut's Scan description in English contains a grammatical error, reading "Called the King of GF; its Mega Flare ignores all defense, giving a powerful blo". In the PlayStation Greatest Hits release this error was corrected so that the first line ends with simply "ignores all defense."
  • In the English translation Zell loves eating hotdogs however in the ending FMV he is seen to be eating flavored bread instead. This is because in the original translation (Japanese) Zell's favorite food was flavored bread, not hotdogs.
  • Though Cid says that Xu, Fujin and Raijin are evacuating students from Garden in case the missiles hit, afterward every student that was there before is still there (except Fujin and Raijin).
  • In the Shumi Village, Squall refers to the elder showing the party the palms of his hands as "They're kind gesture". This should of course be "Their kind gesture".
  • Using Shockwave Pulsar on Ultimecia's final form will cause her cape to grow several times larger than her body. (This is because, as stated in her Scan, that she is absorbing all of time and space in the battle. The stars in the battle environment are actually on the cape and not surrounding the battle, showing that she is indeed absorbing all of time and space.)
  • If the player challenges an NPC to Triple Triad enough times to start the Card Club sidequest as Irvine, they will still be refered as Squall.
  • During Zell's intro FMV the SeeD symbol seen behind him has been flipped.
  • In Final Fantasy VIII Ultimecia's speech patterns seemed to put an emphasis on the letter 'c', pronouncing it as a harder sound than normal. This is shown through the game text as replacing this letter with the letter 'k', as seen in the line, "Kurse all SeeDs. Swarming like lokust akross generations." Later on however, during and after she evolves into her final form she loses this emphasis. This could be due to her final form possibly not talking physically but telepathically.

[edit] Final Fantasy IX

  • It is revealed later in the game that Garnet and her mother were summoners, and that Garnet's horn was removed when she was found washed up on the beach. However, in the opening sequence, which shows a flashback of Garnet and her mother, neither she nor her mother have horns. This may be explained by the idea that Garnet would have a very vague memory of this and might not remember details like the horns.

[edit] Final Fantasy X

  • After the attack on Kilika Port by Sin and Yuna performs the Sending, Tidus wakes up in the hotel. If he goes downstairs and talks to the boy with the blitzball downstairs, the boy will tell Tidus "I wanna be a blitzball when I grow up!" instead of saying he wants to be a blitzball player.
  • When Wakka asks Tidus if Yuna is cute, you are given the choice of, "Yes" or, "No." If you choose, "Yes," Wakka will say, "Don't get any big ideas, ya?" If you say, "No," then he will not say it. However regardless of choice, during Tidus' dream, Rikku will still say that Wakka said not to get any big ideas.
  • After the final battle wherein Yu Yevon possesses all of Yuna's acquired aeons, all of the weapon models for each member of the party disappear while remaining in their respective combat stances (Auron stands in the position with his sword over his shoulder but his hand is empty, Wakka comically holds nothing in his right hand).
  • If you enter The Cavern of the Stolen Fayth after defeating Yunalesca or the conversation with Mika, the conversation is the same as when you first get the chance to enter before scaling Mt Gagazet, thus creating the strange instance of characters speculating on events they already know to be false.
  • A scene takes place in the game when Kimahri, Tidus, and Lulu confront the Al Bhed having just kidnapped Yuna during the Blitzball tournament, and an action scene takes place where Tidus and Kimahri jump onto the boat from the dock to confront the Al Bhed, but Lulu is not shown jumping, yet appears on the boat in the next scene.
  • There is a scene during the game when the party is on the airship after the attack on home. They fly to Bevelle to find Yuna, and they presumably slide down an attached cable, everyone but Lulu is seen sliding down the cable, as she is being carried by Kimahri, possibly due to her dress or not being as agile as the other characters.
  • If you initiate the part where you battle Sin on the Airship in an attempt to get inside but go somewhere else before actually taking him down, people (in the Calm Lands, at least) will still talk about how they sang the Hymn and saw Sin go down near Bevelle, despite Sin still being up there.

[edit] Final Fantasy X-2

  • Lulu is supposed to be in the end of her third trimester of pregnancy, but her original model from X is used in each and every one of her appearances. Even Rikku notices, commenting that "she doesn't 'look' pregnant(Square Enix stated they didn't want to create a new character model for her)."

[edit] Final Fantasy XI

  • Being a MMORPG based entirely on textual data to convey its stories, item information, and so forth, the scale of dialogue which is localized all at once into four different languages and released simultaneously at each version update is immense. Because of this, there are a number of typographical errors in cutscene dialogue, on item descriptions, and so forth, that continue to go unnoticed by developers on a regular basis. Some are identified by players and fixed, others are hidden in the depths of quests so unfrequented that they remain today, unseen for seven years.

  • Cloud's Zodiac sign is given as Aquarius even though it was Leo in Final Fantasy VII.

[edit] Dissidia Final Fantasy

  • Due to Ultimecia's visual design, it is possible to cause a situation where one can look up her dress to reveal her wearing nothing underneath. The same can be done for Terra Branford in her alternate costume, with her wearing something underneath.
  • If you may have noticed, like in the other Final Fantasy games, the 3D graphics may show clothing, tools, characters, etc. passing through themselves. In Dissidia, this is quite noticeable. For example, Cloud of Darkness' hair and tentacles can be seen passing through her cape. Zidane's ponytail also goes through his back, and Squall's hair sometimes clips through his face.
  • In one of the Chaos Reports, a sentence reads, "This is the the way to salvation left to me," It should read "This is the only way to salvation left to me."
  • When Tidus uses his HP Attack Charge & Assault, the name shown at the top of the screen is actually Slice and Dice, a possible reference to his Overdrive in Final Fantasy X.
  • Ultimecia's accent from Final Fantasy VIII is not used, neither by voice nor by text in Dissidia.
  • An audio glitch, while in EX Mode, Terra can Doublecast many of her spells, however when she Doublecasts Ultima where she normally says, "Oh perfect light, I want to end this!" she will instead say only "Oh perfect-", the rest of the audio cut out as the second Ultima begins.
  • Despite never seen walking, the Cloud of Darkness is not able to glide.
  • When playing as Squall, one of his end battle quotes is: "Gone talk'n to a wall" when originally it should have been "Go talk to a wall"

[edit] Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

  • When Aki gets cornered by phantoms in Old New York at the beginning of the film and the Deep Eyes come to rescue her, all four members of the Deep Eye Squad jump from the transport (even though one of them should be the pilot), but only three of them hit the ground. Just a few seconds later, Aki tries to escape through a gap between two buildings. The three Deep Eyes follow her. When Ryan shoots at two phantoms hitting some explosive tanks in one of the next shots, you can see four Deep Eyes again.
  • When Gray is being operated on by Aki (he's on the medical table) you can clearly see a reddish-brown scar on the lower left side of his neck (it's not a recent wound). It appears off and on for the rest of the film.
  • After the same operation, Aki turns around to pick up the canister containing the plant off a table there is no table or ledge. If you watch the movie with the commentary one of the members involved with the movie says that it is floating on nothing.
  • The DVD includes some cast bloopers as well:
    • Grey shoots through the hangar window and then knocks himself out as his attempt to jump through it fails.
    • In the scene where Neil drives through the building and crashes, the main characters emerge with debris (pipes, tools, stop signs) through their heads, and yet they continue to act as if nothing has happened.
    • In the Wasteland, Grey stumbles and accidentally shoots Aki. After realizing she's not moving, he nonchalantly sets his gun aside and starts running.
    • Aki drives her spaceship into Grey during the shoot-out in the hangar.
    • During the conference scene, Aki enters the room and smacks Sid upside the head.
    • In the final scene where Aki is solemnly carrying a dead Grey out of the Crater, she happens to sneeze, which causes both her and the dead body to break out into laughter.

  • Regardless of whether Prettz has his kiku-ichimonji in possession or not in one scene, it appears conveniently in the other. For example, when the baby Hiryuu suddenly grew into an adult, it carried Prettz, who dropped the sword, up and out of the cave they were in. In the next episode, the kiku-ichimonji was in his possession again inside the Iron Wing.

Unlike a plot hole, an unexplained event doesn't contradict the game's plot.

  • In the original game, it is not explained how Garland and the Four Fiends manage to travel through time. This is later explained in Dissidia Final Fantasy, being explained as the doing of the Void.
  • It is not explained why the Dark Elf Astos stole Matoya's crystal eye.
  • It is not explained what happened to the king and subjects of the kingdom that Astos took over.
  • It is not explained why the crown of the kingdom that Astos took control of is deep in a cave.
  • It is very illogical that Astos would take control of a kingdom with no subjects then simply sit in the ex-King's throne for five years, presumably waiting for a random person or persons to venture into a cave to retrieve the lost crown.
  • If Astos was so powerful as to single handedly take a kingdom, he could presumably go into the cave himself and take the crown instead of asking the Light Warriors.

  • Neither the Emperor's reasons to throw a world domination campaign, nor the origin of his fiendish powers are ever shown.
  • Why or how Leon becomes the Dark Knight is never explained in a detailed fashion.
  • The Emperor's connection with "hell" is never explained, nor is it explained how he returns to Earth after being killed.
  • In the English version of the PSP remake, the Emperor remarks, upon being confronted in the final dungeon, that he is "the lord master of hell". What this means is unclear, though it could be taken to mean he has taken over hell somehow, or perhaps the Emperor was the lord of hell the entire time and only appeared to be a human.
  • It is not explained why Guy can talk to Beavers.

  • There is a contradiction of the power of the four crystals.They give the chosen ones the rare power of light and the power to change into different classes yet other people in the world not chosen by the crystals are able to use some of these job classes which include:black mage, dark knight, bard, ninja, and evoker. However it would make sense that the jobs that people not chosen by the crystal use may have taken many years to master while the crystal gives the chosen ones all the experience of a job class instantly
  • It is never explained why Noah gave Xande the gift of mortality, as all it seemed to accomplish was to drive Xande insane in a desire to escape it.

  • It is never explained exactly why the King of Baron wants the village of Mist destroyed, although it can be logically deduced that any group with the power to summon Eidolons might be considered a threat against any plans Zemus would have for repopulating the earth with Lunarians.
  • It is never explained why Rydia is able to summon Titan during the destruction of Mist, yet her only summon is a Chocobo (and Whyt in the DS remake) until she leaves the party and returns as an adult. It can be assumed the trauma of losing her mother allowed her to call forth Titan, if only for just that time.
  • Only two of the four Dark Crystals are shown, the other two are only mentioned in passing. They make their appearance in The After Years, but it is still not known where they are usually kept.
  • It is never explained how the Dark Elf was able to steal the Crystal of Earth from Troia, although the Troians do not seem particularly adept at combat.
  • It is never explained exactly how the Tower of Babil was built.
  • It is never stated where the Tower of Zot is, but as the Enterprise rises into the air to fly to it, it has been speculated the Tower floats in the sky somewhere.
  • It is never explained how the races of Earth knew about the existence of the Giant of Babil or why they gathered together in the first place. It is possible the denizens of the overworld had seen it on the horizon but there is no explanation as why or how the dwarves traveled to the overworld.
  • It is never explained how the party can breathe or exist on the Moon without proper utilities to do so.

  • Although The After Years follows the continuity established in the DS version of Final Fantasy IV, Whyt never appears and there is no mention of him.

  • The character Banon, leader of the Returners, plays a fairly important role in the first half of the game, but is then completely forgotten in the second half without any explanation to his fate or whereabouts, although there is fan speculation that Gogo is Banon in disguise or that he died when Kefka destroyed the world.
  • It is never explained why Maria was absent during the Opera sequence and why Celes happens to look like her. Indeed, Maria never appears in the game. It is possible that Maria went in to hiding after Setzer made his intentions known, however, though that does not explain why Celes looks exactly like her.
  • It is never explained when or where Celes learned to act and sing opera. Being a high ranking military officer, Celes should not have had the many years of free time it takes to learn opera.
  • Siegfried's full story is never given. He appears aboard the Phantom Train and in the Figaro Cave, both times without any apparent reason or explanation. He also mentions an impostor pretending to be him is running around, but it is never clearly stated which "Siegfrieds" the party meets (if any) are the real thing and which are the impostor.
  • The full story of Gogo is never given.
  • It's also never explained why Maria just so happens to bear the same name as her character in the opera. This same issue occurs in Final Fantasy IX as well, where Zidane, Marcus, Blank and Cinna all have the same names as characters in "I Want To Be Your Canary".
  • In the World of Ruin, Katarin was far enough into her pregnancy that the kids commented on how huge her belly was getting, yet it took Duane a long time to realize Katarin was pregnant. It is, however, possible that Duane is just rather stupid.

  • In one of the houses in Kalm, there is a trunk which, upon examining, Cloud says "Locked, can't open it..." It is impossible to open this trunk, and the significance of it is never explained.
  • After the events of the Whirlwind Maze, a large crater appears East of Junon on the World Map. It is unknown what caused this crater to appear, although it could be the result of Ultimate WEAPON landing on the continent after being released as it is regularly found floating above it.
  • It has never been revealed where exactly Jenova's origin lies, other than it came from "outer space" over 2000 years ago, and whether or not it has more of its kind out there. Perhaps this is left unexplained in order to add some mysticism to the plot.

  • Assault rifles exist in this universe and prior to Dr. Odine's discoveries only a selected few were able to use magic. Taking this into account, the widespread use of melee weapons remains unexplained.
  • The true nature of the Moon is never explained, nor why the Lunar Cry occurs.
  • Ultimecia's true ambitions and origins are never explained in a clear manner.
  • Balamb Garden has a ballroom which is seen in several scenes in the story, however it is never clear how the characters actually get there as the room does not exist when walking around in the in-game map. However during the ending, when Squall and Rinoa kiss, the camera zooms out from the garden, showing that the balcony is right next to the quad (where the cafeteria should be). So logically, the cafeteria could serve as a ballroom when the tables are cleared out.
  • Although Irvine's remembrance of the party's childhood and why he never mentioned it is explained, it is never fully mentioned how Seifer remembered that they grew up together. This could, however, have happened from being the Matron's knight or because he was only introduced to the memory draining effects of GFs during the Dollet mission.
  • Although weapons are constantly shown to be upgraded or modified at shops, it is never explained where these weapons are originally made in the first place.
  • Sorceress Adel and Ultimecia do not have any knights, yet only Edea does. It is possible that Rinoa's knight is Squall, Seifer is Ultimecia's and Adel's was killed (Cid Being Edea's original Knight).
  • It's never explained what are the GF exactly and why they can be summoned
  • Although Ellone has some sort of special power to junction people to the past, she is not considered a Sorceress. In fact, it is never explained what Ellone's power actually is, if its magical, psychic, or something entirely different.
  • Ellone's powers are left pretty vague, however the "Junction Machine Ellone" is even more unexplained. It is assumed that it works like Ellone's own powers and sends a person's consciousness back to someone they were aware of in the past, however Ultimecia lived generations in the future, and logically wouldn't know anyone from so far back in time, or even why she can only go back that far. It may be, however, that since Edea Kramer has Ultimecia's Sorceress Power, that allows Ultimecia to junction with her (and then later with Rinoa) but this is never properly explained. Even if that was the case, it still wouldn't explain how Ultimecia could junction with Sorceress Adel since she did not have Ultimecia's powers.
  • Again in terms of the "Junction Machine Ellone", although most Final Fantasy VIII fans claim its because Ultimecia already has the machine and it wouldn't change the timeline, not a single person in the party even considers to mention simply destroying the plans for the "Junction Machine Ellone" in their time to stop Ultimecia from getting them in the future. Even if it wouldn't change things in the present, it's such a glaringly obvious suggestion for it to just go unmentioned altogether.
  • Sorceress Powers seems to be affiliated with a specific element, Edea is afilliated with Ice Magic and Ultimecia is affiliated with Time and Space Magic, however Adel does not have an obvious affiliation. She seems to cast most energy and non-elemental spells, so Energy may be her Sorceress Power, but this is never clearly revealed.

  • Necron's origins are never explained; although it is speculated that Necron and SoulCage are the same entity. Necron's origin was later briefly explained in the Ultimania guide, where it is described as being the fear of death given physical form.
  • It is never shown if Kuja died or survived after Zidane fought him (though this may be intentional).
  • After rescuing Hilda, it's never explained just how Garnet (or indeed Tantulus and Zidane) make their way back to Alexandria without the use of an airship or boat. There aren't Gargants that go straight from Lindblum to Alexandria, either. To make matters even more confusing, there's nothing to give a sense of how much time passed between Steiner informing everyone that Garnet was missing and Garnet, Zidane and Tantalus being seen in Alexandria.
  • It is never explained what happens to Cid's first airship, the Hilda Garde I, following the rescuing of Hilda from Mount Gulug. It is sensible to assume that Kuja took it with him when he escaped, with Kuja next being seen on Terra, it can be assumed he used the Hilda Garde I to travel there and it was likely destroyed along with Terra.

  • The existence of the Sphere Grid is never properly explained, unlike in other Final Fantasy games where systems of leveling up and learning new abilities are given a backstory or reason to be. This is seen in games such as Final Fantasy VII with Materia, or Final Fantasy VIII and the Guardian Forces, the Sphere Grid, however, just exists and all of the main party members just happen to share the same grid.
  • It seems people in Final Fantasy X can either breath underwater or hold their breaths for phenomenal lengths of time, however this as well is never properly explained. The latter does seem more likely since every person in Spira lives on land and there are no underwater civilizations, leading to the assumption they can't survive underwater permanently. The Aurochs do comment on how "the best blitzball players can hold their breath, like, forever!" On the other hand, one theory is that in blitzball arenas, the water is infused with pyroflies which allow the players to hold their breath for twice as long. As for other occasions, it could be said that since most of the people in Spira live close to water, logically many of them would have good lung capacity. It is possible to train the lungs to hold air better and longer so blitzball players may practice underwater so as to hold there breath for at least five minutes in the blitzball 'sphere pool' (the bubble-shaped arena). This is why the Aurochs practice at the beach. Yuna trains her lungs, too, after the main story of Final Fantasy X.
  • Similiarly, in Luca during the fiend attack, Tidus speaks underwater, without any additional sound effects from the water.

  • It is never stated why the Occuria leave Ivalice, and yet still take such an active interest in the goings on of the world. They also disappear without explanation after the destruction of the Sun-Cryst, seemingly giving up their control of history without as much as a single comment. It is, however, possible that they went back to controlling history behind the scenes.

  • It is never known why or how the units from the Akademy that accompany Ramza and Delita in the first part of the game survived the incident at Ziekden Fortress nor why they would still follow him after he was branded a heretic. It could be assumed that these units were either very loyal to Ramza, became branded as heretics at the same time as Ramza, felt betrayed and wanted revenge, or were mercenaries that just happened to have the same job skills and abilities as the former units.

  • Many unused items are in the game's code, and still have their stats intact. This includes equipment exclusively found in the Advance version, and others not found anywhere else, such as Tokita's Sword. Tokita's Sword gives characters maximum stats, and allows them to break the damage limit of 9,999. It's possible these items were transferred from the code of the Advance version, or were also used for beta testing.

  • If the player attacks barehanded with Bartz as a Blue Mage, a graphical glitch occurs where Bartz's face will briefly appear in front of his legs. This still remains in the Advance version.
  • In the Anthologies version of Final Fantasy V, if the player visits Kelgar after Ghido's island sinks, the dialogue between the party and Kelgar will be in gibberish. It is either a glitch, or the block of text was mostly left untranslated. This does not occur in the Advance version of the game, as it has a whole new localization.

  • In the Debug Menu, amongst the FMVs listed for Disc 2 are ones called Laguna/Squall watching the moon. When played, they show scenes from the Clash of the Gardens - indicating these FMVs were dummied out for some reason, most likely lack of disc space. The Laguna scene sounds like it could have been a movie of him proposing to Raine, like in the ending. Squall's moon scene may have been him watching the moon during the concert at Fisherman's Horizon. However, there is also promotional CG artwork that depicts Squall and Laguna look at the night sky, which may have been part of this FMV at one point.
  • According to the Debug Menu, the FMV of Adel junctioning herself to Rinoa was going to be on Disc 3, so it is likely that Adel was going to be the final boss of Disc 3 instead of Seifer, but her boss fight and FMV were moved to Disc 4 likely due to lack of space on Disc 3 for another FMV. This would have kept with the pattern of ending each disc with a Sorceress battle.
  • Originally, there were two other spells slated to be in Selphie's Limit Break, but for an unknown reason, they were never programmed in; they can, however, be accessed with a Gameshark. When used, the animation is of the Fire spell. These two extra spells are:
    • Percent - cuts all enemies' HP by a certain percentage.
    • Catastrophe - the ultimate offensive spell, more powerful than even Apocalypse.

  • In the disc data there is a Buster Sword like the one from Cloud in Final Fantasy VII that doesn't appear in the game. It was possibly created to be a special sword that was never used or to be acessed by a GameShark-like system.

  • Being the nature of any MMORPG, glitches in Final Fantasy XI are discovered by the players and reported in real-time. The game has been (and continues to be) subjected to frequent patches and updates; generally these take place on a quarterly timeline. During these updates, old code is altered, and new code is introduced for new items, spells, quests, and so forth. And by the nature of coding and the alteration of code, flares in programming pop up from time to time, ranging the gamut from typographical errors on item descriptions, all the way to monster behavior being altered dramatically. These errors are typically patched within a few days of the original patch, often resulting in emergency maintenance.
  • Many items in the game have hidden effects that may only activate under specific, and sometimes infrequent, conditions. Such conditions can include status effects or food being active on the character, party composition, time and day, weather, moon phase, TP and HP and MP quantity, and many others. While some items include a description of these conditions, players are left on their own to discover the true effects of other items. Some of a character's stats are hidden as well, including Accuracy, Evasion, Magic Attack, and the Tactical Points of other party members.
