The following is a list of abilities in Final Fantasy IV. While the J2e version of the game had all of the abilities from the Japanese release, some abilities were removed from the SNES release. All these abilities were then re-added in the PlayStation release. The Game Boy Advance release uses the same abilities but adds more that can only be used if certain pieces of equipment are equipped. The Nintendo DS doesn't use the Game Boy Advance exclusive abilities, but uses a new ability system, called the Augment system.
Cecil intercepts physical attacks on an ally. Cecil will automatically use Cover on allies in critical status. Cecil cannot use Cover when he is in critical status. Usable only while Cecil is a Paladin.
Casts a White Magic spell the character has learned. Both Rydia and Cecil have highly limited spell lists and learn spells as they level up. Rydia is only able to use White Magic as a child, and Cecil can only use White Magic as a Paladin. Tellah knows a handful of spells as first and remembers many more later. FuSoYa has access to every White spell in the game. Rosa and Porom learn spells as they level up and can eventually learn every White spell in the game.
Casts a Black Magic spell the character has learned. Tellah knows a handful of spells as first and remembers many more later. FuSoYa has access to every Black spell in the game. Rydia and Palom learn spells as they level up and can eventually learn every Black spell in the game. The exception is Fire, which Rydia learns in accordance with the story.
Edward removes himself from battle and cannot be targeted by allies or enemies. Edward cannot perform any actions except Show, which returns him to battle.
Rosa attacks an enemy with an attack that never misses, doing slightly more damage than normal. Rosa can only use this ability if she is equipped with a bow.
Palom and Porom chant together to unleash an extra-strong spell. Only usable if both twins are alive and neither is afflicted by a status ailment that would prevent them from casting spells, such as Silence, Confuse, etc. If either twin is knocked out or afflicted with one of the mentioned status ailments, the spell is canceled.
Edge casts a Ninja spell he has learned. Edge learns new spells as he levels up, with the exception of Flood and Blitz, which he learns in accordance with the story.
In the PlayStation version of Final Fantasy IV some abilities are added that were omitted from the English release of the SNES version, and other abilities were renamed. Dart, Sneak, and Peep were renamed Throw, Steal, and Study respectively.
Kain leaps into the air, where he is incapable of being healed or taking damage. After several turns, he descends and delivers an attack twice as strong as normal.
Tellah casts a random Black Magic spell on all enemies, it also has a chance of failing. If Tellah doesn't have enough MP to cast the selected spell, he will use the fail reaction instead of attempting to cast the spell. Tellah loses this ability when he remembers his spells.
Yang skips his turn to build up strength and use an attack twice as strong on his next turn. This command is most effective against Flan, even though it isn't a targeted weakness, but a complementary command to Kick. Poison disables the Power command.
The following are the abilities usable in the Advance release. All of the above abilities are still present, although some names have changed; Dark, Recal, Call, Peep and Bear are called Dark Wave, Recall, Summon, Study and Guard, respectively. Many abilities can be "upgraded" by equipping a certain equipment piece.
Replaces Pray when Rosa is equipped with the White Ring. Rosa restores a moderate amount of HP to the party and heals all status ailments. There is a chance Miracle will fail, in which case its effect is identical to Pray.
Replaces Power when Yang is equipped with the Discipline Armband. Yang skips his turn to build up strength and use an attack three times as strong on his next turn. This command is most effective against Flan, even though it isn't a targeted weakness, but a complementary command to Kick.
Replaces Sneak when Edge is equipped with the Hanzo Gloves. Edge attempts to steal an item from an enemy and inflicts damage to them. If he fails, Edge may take moderate damage.
The following are the abilities usable in the Nintendo DS release. Many of the following abilities are highly altered from their original appearances in prior release, and several can be learned as Augment abilities.
Cecil enters "Darkness" status for three turns, increasing the strength of his attacks, making all of his attacks shadow-elemental, and inflicting damage to him whenever he attacks. Usable when Cecil is a Dark Knight and as an Augment ability.
