This is a list of Final Fantasy II magic spells.
Spells in Final Fantasy II are learned via the use of Tomes (Scrolls in the Origins release) that are shown in the party's Items list. A character need only collect a Tome (found in various locations throughout the game) and use it to learn the spell. Any character can learn any spell, and all characters have sixteen spell slots, allowing them to use up to sixteen spells.
These spells are then subject to the same Skill System that affects all other aspects of character development. Spells gain levels through battle and field use; after a certain number of uses, the spell will gain a level. As more levels are earned, it becomes harder to level up the spells, to the point where a player must sometimes increase the rank of the foe in order for the spell to continue to gain experience. The highest spell level, like that of weapon level, is 16; once a spell reaches that point, it will earn experience until the bar maxes out, and then will be considered "mastered". Mastered spells gain a new casting effect and an increase in effectiveness.
A spell's MP cost is equal to its level. For example, Fire 12 will cost 12 MP. For this reason, a spell can cost anywhere from 1 to 16 MP, and in certain cases, a higher level spell is actually economically disadvantageous, as it brings about marginally better effects at a much higher cost.
Should the need arise, characters can also Discard spells to make room for new ones. However, once a spell is deleted, it's gained skill levels and experience will not be retained, so use caution when discarding spells.
Characters can also use the Tomes directly from their inventory to call on a spell's intended effect with moderate power; however, this function is one-time use, so the Tome disappears after use in such a way.
