As the principal protagonist of her saga, Lightning represents it in series compilations, crossovers, anthologies, and other works by Square Enix, and by others in collaboration with Square Enix. The following is a list of works in which Lightning has appeared outside the Final Fantasy XIII series.

Series appearances[]

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Lightning XIV

Lightning.

Lightning appeared during the Lightning Strikes event to commemorate the release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Final Fantasy XIV producer, Naoki Yoshida, said the sidequest was tied directly into the Lightning Saga, but not linked with the lore and story of Final Fantasy XIV.[1]

The rewards from this event consisted of Lightning and Snow's costumes as well as a set of weapons from the trilogy.

Since Patch 2.1, the female playable characters can have Lightning's hairstyle by using the Aesthetician's service.

Triple Triad[]

Lightning appears as a legendary (5-stars) card. It used to be the most powerful card with its total number of 36 (9 A 7 A) before Square Enix quickly decreased it to 27 (9 1 7 A) during an emergency server maintenance they had shortly after the Gold Saucer update.

Final Fantasy Dimensions II[]

Lightning appears as a summon and a character costume for players to obtain.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)[]

Lightning appears as a set of two player icons to represent Final Fantasy XIII, though these icons can only be obtained through passwords.

Tetsuya Nomura and his staff originally wanted to include Lightning in Dissidia Final Fantasy, but left her out to avoid revealing her abilities before Final Fantasy XIII was released.[2]

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

Artwork of Lightning.

Lightning is one of the warriors summoned by Cosmos to oppose Chaos, and stands as the sole character representing Final Fantasy XIII. Initially traveling with Tifa, Laguna, and Vaan, Lightning is left behind when she battles Kuja. Shortly after an army of manikins sweeps over the land, Lightning is attacked by Kain.

Returning to Cosmos to tell her what is happening, Lightning faces the Warrior of Light, who reveals he and Kain are putting the others to sleep on purpose to avoid them falling to the manikins and risking not being revived in the next cycle of the war. Lightning rejects this plan and leads Kain, Tifa, Laguna, Yuna and Vaan to the Lands of Discord where the six sacrifice themselves to seal the portal to The Void the manikins are emerging from.

Lightning's alternate outfit gives her white hair and a more subdued color scheme to match her concept art by Yoshitaka Amano. Her second alternate costume gives her the generic female Guardian Corps uniform, a dull orange and brown outfit with a cap. As a fourth bonus outfit available with purchase of The 3rd Birthday, Lightning dresses as Aya Brea, wearing torn blue jeans and a midriff bearing sleeveless black shirt.

Nomura has stated he personally would include Sazh in a Dissidia sequel over Lightning, but his only request for such a game would be Kain Highwind from Final Fantasy IV - Kain and Lightning were the first two new characters confirmed for Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT[]

Lightning.

Lightning is a playable character and a representative of Final Fantasy XIII. She is classed as an Assasin character. She no longer uses the gun mechanism of her weapon due to her new playstyle. Her second form has her wearing her Knight of Etro outfit and wielding her Overture gunblade. Her third outfit is the Equilibrium and her sword Crimson Blitz.

As she runs from these authorities, her Focus is revealed and it drives her to stand in defiance of the sacred beings her people call gods.

Online description

Lightning appears as a default playable character.

Lightning has great all-around stats and abilities, but she's ultimately outclassed by other characters that excel in their field. She's one of three characters to possess the rare ability Hero's Rime, which boosts the stats of all party members. All of her abilities cost high CP, however, so the must player must gain more experience for her, or utilize other characters that fare better with the abilities.

CollectaCard, Lightning Returns version

Lightning is a playable character, and is one of the few characters to have a 2nd variation. Her 1st variation is her appearance in Final Fantasy XIII, donning her Guardian Corps attire, and is available from the start, while her 2nd version is the main representative of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, wearing her Equilibrium outfit, and can be available from the start by transferring save data from the second demo of Curtain Call. However, if the player did not select either among their party of four, or download the demo for the latter, she can later be unlocked by collecting Red and Green Crystal Shards, respectively.

She is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in the Japanese release and Ali Hillis in the English release.

Having been sent on a request to dispatch Odin, Lightning is bested in battle and has her blade snapped into two by the powerful mirage. Lann and Reyn try to help her out during an intervention but are disrupted by an abrupt Zantetsuken. Following Odin's exit from the intervention, he encounters Lightning again and challenges her once more to battle. Lightning conjures Ramewl, a mirage relative of Ramuh who enchants Lightning with the lightning element. Upon doing so, Lann and Reyn manage to intervene and defeat Odin, with Lightning giving her thanks to their mysterious presence.

Who's Who
Lightning
CV: Ali Hillis / Maaya Sakamoto
Age in Grymoire: 21
Notes: Virtuous / Looks out for other people / On the stoic side / Genius with a sword / One of this age's greatest warriors
Reading Into the Outfit
Lightning is looking great in her outfit from LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII. But does that mean her soul might actually be over 500 years old? No wonder it only took her 21 years in Grymoire to become something of a living legend—and that was before the twins awakened her.
Lightning's superhuman skills drew the attention of Quistis and Squall, who tracked her down and persuaded her to lend her strength to the League of S.
Careless?
Between failing to catch the poison in Lann and Reynn's drinks and letting the bad guys get the upper hand, the Grymoirian Lightning seems to be surprisingly careless. Maybe it's because the burdens she bears are relatively light, and she's never been in quite as desperate a situation as her original. Note that she puts a surprising amount of faith in her allies in the League of S. Maybe she knows it's okay to slip up now and then if you have friends to lean on. And that makes her a little more human.
Watch and Learn
You may think, "If only I knew Odin's Zantetsuken. I could defeat any enemy with a single strike!" Sorry to get your hopes up, kiddo, but that's not necessarily true. Just going through the motions isn't enough; the technique requires power and skill. Imagine Odin's surprise, then, when Lightning attempted the move without so much as practicing!
Well, there's more to Lightning than meets the eye. The very first thing that Lightning thought to do with her new technique was destroy the golden flan (aka the Big Jiggle) and save Snow and her younger sister's village.
