Artwork by Yoshitaka Amano.

The Lich (リッチ, Ricchi?), also called Rich, is a recurring enemy and boss in the Final Fantasy series. While he has no consistent appearance, he is always a magical-aligned undead. The Lich is sometimes teamed up with Marilith, the Kraken, and Tiamat to make the Four Fiends.

Template:Sideicon Liches are mid-level members of the Skeleton genus. They can be found in a variety of areas including Western Altepa Desert (at night only), Attohwa Chasm (at night only), the Sacrarium, Toraimarai Canal, the Eldieme Necropolis, and the past version of the Eldieme Necropolis.

Liches are generally unexceptional members of their type, using their scythes and black magic determined by their level to attack. However, the liches found in the present time version of the Eldieme Necropolis are special because they randomly drop Ancient Papyrus, one of three items needed to advance beyond level 50.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Template:Sideicon

Lich in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Lich, mistranslated as Rich in the original English release, is a summon spell. Lich is an undead mage that spits out a blast of black lightning as it flies overhead. This attack is especially effective against Lucavi demons as it can even do 999 damage to Ultima. This is because Lich's attack works by dealing half of a monster's maximum health in damage, and bosses such as Ultima have well over the 1998 health required to reach to the damage cap.

It costs 40 MP to summon, has a speed of 12, and needs 600 JP to learn. Lich has a 20% chance of randomly being learned in battle by a Summoner who has not yet learned it and is not KO'd by it, or absorbs at least 1 HP worth of damage. Nullifying the damage does not count.

In the original PlayStation version, when summoned, the summoner will sometimes mutter, "Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich!". This was removed from the Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Etymology

In fantasy fiction, a lich is a type of undead creature. Often such a creature is the result of a transformation, as a powerful magician or king striving for eternal life uses spells or rituals to bind his intellect to his animated corpse and thereby achieve a form of immortality.
