"l'Cie. Those marked by the fal'Cie for a greater destiny"
—Official Final Fantasy XIII game trailer

The l'Cie (ルシ Rushi) (pronounced "luh-see") are people marked by the god-like fal'Cie to do their bidding in Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII titles Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. The mark of the l'Cie is visible somewhere on the persons body. The Eidolons are said to be their salvation, for they are created by the crystal sprouting from the mark of the l'Cie. The shape of these crystals and Eidolons varies from each person according to "what's in their hearts".

In Cocoon, l'Cies are feared by the society and are hunted by PSICOM soldiers. If a l'Cie fails on his or her Focus, they will transform into a monstrous crystallized creature known as a Cie Corpse. The "reward" for succeeding to fulfill a Focus is transformation into a crystal.

[edit] Final Fantasy XIII

The fal'Cie of Pulse chooses the l'Cie.

There are seven confirmed l'Cies in Final Fantasy XIII:

  • Lightning, whose mark is located in her chest. Her crystal is the shape of a rose because of her high class, and it transforms into the Eidolon Odin.
  • Snow Villiers, whose mark is on his left forearm. His crystal has taken the shape of a heart because of his life energy, and the Eidolon it contains is Shiva.
  • Oerba Dia Vanille who has the mark in a hidden location. Her Eidolon is thusfar unknown.
  • Sazh Katzroy, who also has the mark in his chest, half-visible under his shirt. His Eidolon is Brynhildr.
  • Hope Estheim, whose mark is in his left wrist. His Eidolon is Alexander.
  • Oerba Yun Fang, who has a mark on her right shoulder and her Eidolon has been revealed to be Bahamut.
  • Serah Farron, who was the first Pulse l'Cie in Cocoon. Her mark is located in her upper left arm. Her Eidolon is also unknown.

Not all of these characters are l'Cies in the beginning of the game, but they become ones after they go to meet the fal'Cie of Pulse. At least some of the l'Cies regret their situation, as Lightning tells Snow that they have been "cursed". Only the l'Cies can use magic and summons in the game.

The director of the game, Motomu Toriyama, revealed that the fal'Cie of Cocoon also chooses l'Cie of its own during the game.

[edit] Final Fantasy Agito XIII

In Final Fantasy Agito XIII, the army of Cid's country is composed of l'Cies.
