Kirin is an esper in Final Fantasy VI who can be acquired as a magicite. It is one of the first four magicites the party acquires.

Profile[]

Kirin appears as a silver horse-like creature similar to a unicorn, though it has two crooked golden horns rather than one straight one. Its mane, tail, and feathering are green.

Story[]

Kirin was one of several espers captured by the Gestahlian Empire during their first raid on the esper world. The captive espers were taken back to the Magitek Research Facility at Vector and experimented on and their magic drained to develop the Empire's Magitek army.

At an unknown point, Ramuh attempted escape with Kirin, Cait Sith and Siren, but only Ramuh survived. He kept the magicite remains of his comrades with him as he went into hiding at Zozo. When the Returners met Ramuh while searching for Terra, Ramuh urged them to shut down the Magitek Research Facility and free the espers still held captive. To aid them in this, he turned himself into magicite and entrusted himself and the three magicites of his comrades to them.

Gameplay[]

Kirin costs 18 MP to summon and casts Holy Aura (or Life Guard in the Super NES and PlayStation versions), which grants regen to the party. It does not provide any stat boosts upon leveling up.

Kirin is not a very useful summon. Any attack that inflicts sap will overwrite regen, and Regen usually does not restore much HP to the party.

Spells[]

Kirin is excellent as the first esper the party receives to teach valuable healing spells that every character should learn. However, once the player completes the Magitek Research Facility and the party can acquire Seraph, Kirin is overshadowed since Seraph teaches three of the same spells at much faster rates, and also teaches Esuna, which is more useful than Poisona. However, Kirin remains useful for teaching the useful Libra spell.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]

Kirin is a Rank 4 holy-elemental magicite in Record Keeper. It has the passive abilities Healing Boon and Empower Holy, which raise the amount of HP the party covers with healing skills, and the damage they deal with holy attacks. It has no summon ability, and its normal attacks are Regen, Cura, and Holy Aura, which grants Regen to the party.

Etymology[]

Kirin is the Japanese and Korean name for the Qilin, which is a mythical hooved Chinese chimerical creature known throughout various East Asian cultures, and is said to appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a wise sage or an illustrious ruler.
