The King of Baron once found an infant under a tree just outside Baron. As the infant reminded him of Cecilia, he named him Cecil, and raised Cecil to be a Dark Knight. He also wanted Kain to be raised as a Dark Knight, however, Kain wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Dragoon. He eventually made Cecil the captain of the Red Wings due to his loyalty to the Crown. However, eventually Cagnazzo, the Archfiend of Water, secretly killed the king and became an impostor king.
Once Cagnazzo is defeated, Cecil can meet the true king, who reveals himself to be the Dark Knight Odin. If Rydia has gone to Feymarch, he will test her by battling her. If Rydia and the party win, Odin will answer her summons.In the DS remake of the game, Edge can steal a Darkness augment from the optional boss, alluding to the King's job class as a Dark Knight.
