Battle[]

Kimara Bug's appearance is intimidating, but its only truly dangerous attack is Stop Web, which always inflicts Stop and is only used when no characters are afflicted with the status. It only uses Spider Attack when the whole party is in Stop status. Kimara Bugs are one of only two sources of the Hourglass item, and the only source for the Spider Web item outside of Midgar.

Strategy[]

Kimara Bug is easily halted by manipulating it and making it use Stop Web on itself, freezing it in place. It is trickier in the Battle Square where the player only has one party member, and so it is best to defeat it as fast as possible. Bringing the Manipulate Materia to the battle arena still works well, but the player's Materia may be broken as a result of a handicap. Pairing Added Effect with Time also adds the Stop status to normal attacks, effective against Kimara Bug.

Behind the scenes[]

Kimara Bug has the face and body of a praying mantis, the face of a spider, and the face of a butterfly. Two of these represent notable phobias: arachnophobia—one of the most commonly reported year over year—as a fear of spiders, and lepidopterophobia, a fear of butterflies and moths. Praying mantises are not themselves a common phobia outside of the generalized fear of bugs, entomophobia. The spider and butterfly components are referred to in the enemy's attacks.

Etymology[]

The chimera is a fire-breathing monster, one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It is commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail in Greek mythology. In modern usage, the term chimera is often taken to mean any sort of hybrid between two or more species.
