Eorzea's children are as trees in a grove—bending to the wind like the willow, or bearing it like the oak. Yet live how we might, the wind shall blow.

Kan-E-Senna

Kan-E-Senna is a non-player character in Final Fantasy XIV. She is the Elder Seedseer of Gridania, a title bestowed upon those chosen to mediate between the elementals of the forest and the living people within it. She also acts as a commander of the Order of the Twin Adder - one of three Grand Companies of Eorzea.

History[]

Early life[]

Kan-E-Senna is the eldest of three Padjal siblings, her sister being Raya-O-Senna, and her brother being A-Ruhn-Senna. As is common amongst those born into the prestigious Senna line, she was blessed with the gift of prophecy, her visions hauntingly clear and detailed. Before reaching her sixth nameday, she had already predicted a devastating fire and a locust infestation, earning her the position of Stillglade Fane's Hearer at a remarkably early age.[1]

Kan-E and Ea-Sura from FFXIV

She studied alongside a fellow Padjal Ea-Sura-Supin, whom she looked up to like a brother. During this time she was not keen on studying, many times remarking she didn't want to, desiring to rather adventure beyond the Twelveswood. Ea-Sura encouraged her to keep with her studies, and she eventually did. When Ea-Sura mysteriously disappeared after an incident where he lost his connection to the elementals, Kan-E-Senna resolved to carry on for the both of them. However, she never found out what really happened to her friend.

After becoming Elder Seedseer she left Gridania to live with her siblings, aiding them in maintaining peaceful relations between the elementals and mankind. She returned to Gridania in reaction to the increasing number of natural anomalies, and reinstated the Order of the Twin Adder to ready the forest city-state for what lied ahead.

As Gridania was geographically closest to the Garlean Empire, as well as adjacent to Mor Dhona, it was considered the first line of defense against both threats. Kan-E-Senna was the first to send word to the other Grand Companies to request the reformation of the Eorzean Alliance.

Kan-E-Senna was present at the Battle of Carteneau overseeing Gridania's forces. She caught glimpse of a mysterious figure watching her and the other leaders from a distant hill. In the aftermath of Bahamut's carnage, Kan-E-Senna tended to the wounded, including a Garlean youth found beneath a damaged Reaper. She healed him despite his prior affiliation; years later, he would join her honor guard, the Keepers of the Entwined Serpent.

Before the troops returned for Gridania, Kan-E-Senna located and recovered Archon Louisoix Leveilleur's damaged staff—the Tupsimati—from the flats. She gave it to Yda Hext and Papalymo Totolymo upon her return to the city-state.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]

If the adventurer began their journey in Gridania, they met Kan-E-Senna when she personally congratulated them on assisting the God's Quiver Bow on repelling agitated Ixali summoners at the Guardian Tree. She welcomed them to attend the Greenbliss festival as its Emissary, where Gridanians celebrated the peace between man and elementals. She granted the adventurer a blessing with the elementals, and was surprised by the Crystal of Light they possessed, marking them as blessed by Hydaelyn: a "Warrior of Light". She explained to the adventurer of the Warriors of Light, brave souls who protected Eorzea during the fight against both primals and the Garlean Empire, who were blessed in a similar manner.

The adventurer experienced an Echo vision of Kan-E-Senna present at the Battle of Carteneau, where she noticed a mysterious figure overseeing the battle between Eorzea and the Empire. As the Grand Companies and the assisting forces suffered tremendous casualties, she encouraged Raubahn Aldynn and Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn to withdraw the troops. Experiencing this Echo vision caused the adventurer to collapse. They visited Kan-E-Senna again after recovering where she was pleased to see them feeling better. She asked them to serve as Gridania's envoy to the other city-states, requesting they participate in the remembrance ceremonies for the Battle of Carteneau.

As the adventurer disembarked from Gridania, Kan-E-Senna was present in the crowd seeing them off, smiling up at them.

Whether or not the adventurer started in Gridania, or they visited Gridania for the first time from another city-state, Kan-E-Senna was met in the Mih Khetto Amphitheatre delivering a memorial speech in remembrance of the Battle of Carteneau, which was also attended by Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]

The Warrior of Light, Alphinaud Leveilleur, Estinien Wyrmblood, and Ysayle Dangoulain encountered moogles while traversing Dravania, at the top of Sohm Al, in the Churning Mists. Alphinaud decided they will need an expert on moogles, and returned to Gridania to speak with Kan-E-Senna and the moogles of the Twelveswood. Kan-E-Senna was instantly intrigued and determined that the moogles of Twelveswood were descendants of the moogles from Churning Mists.

She accompanied the Warrior and Alphinaud to Dravania to speak with these moogles to establish relations with them. Her efforts brought a sense of renewed purpose to the moogles, who were adamant that they were the only moogles left in the world.

When the truth about Ishgard's foundation was revealed, Archbishop Thordan VII fled the city with the Allagan key that allowed him and his Heavens' Ward to enter the floating fortress Azys Lla. The Warrior and Alphinaud, with the help of Cid Garlond, gave pursuit. Azys Lla was surrounded by an aetheric barrier, which they couldn't bypass. Alphinaud determined they will need an expert on aether, and the only one whom he could think of was Y'shtola who had used forbidden magick and vanished along with Thancred. Alphinaud believed she could merely be stuck within the Lifestream and turned again to Kan-E Senna to ask the elementals to seek Y'shtola from the aetherial sea and bring her back. Kan-E-Senna, and her siblings, Raya-O and A-Ruhn, swore to do everything they could.

FFXIV Seedseer Siblings bringing Y'shtola back

To channel the required conjure, Kan-E-Senna needed the presence of a blood relative to find find Y'shtola's aether in the Lifestream. Y'shtola's sister, Y'mhitra Rhul, agreed to help. With the help of the elementals and Y'mhitra, Kan-E-Senna and her siblings brought Y'shtola back from the Lifestream. She forbade Alphinaud and the Warrior from seeing her until she had recovered enough, as being within the Lifestream for so long could have affected her in various ways.

Sometime after Dragonsong War was put to an end, Kan-E-Senna, along with other leaders, learned that new Viceroy now sitting in the occupied Ala Mhigo, and it's none other than Zenos yae Galvus - crown prince of the Garlean Empire, and legatus of the XIIth legion. Griffin, zealously wanting to liberate his homeland, consult with Ascian Elidibus, who brought him eyes of Nidhogg, which later uses as a last resolve, after his initial attempt to infiltrate Baelsar's Wall was thwarted by the Warrior of Light. He summons a powerful dragon-like primal, who Ala Mhigans begin to call Shinryu, to wrought Garlean forces low, ending his life as part of the ritual.

Before Shinryu could wreak havoc upon Eorzea, Papalymo uses Tupsimati, the staff of Louisoix, to seal the beast, sacrificing himself in the process. The Eozean Alliance meet in the Nophica's Altar, so they can discuss what to do next. Nero Scaeva, now defect from the Epire just like Cid, propose to use Omega - an Allagan superweapon, which he discovered beneath the Cartenau flats. Though risky, all leaders agreed upon this desicion. Despite some troubles from the Empire, Omega was activated, and proceeded to destroy the primal. Kan-E-Senna, together with Raubahn, Merlwyb and Aymeric, protected by the barrier, watched the battle between god and the machine, and witnessed as they both fall somewehere into Ala Mhigan soil.

Despite Eorzean Alliance's hesitation to directly confront the Empire, Griffin's machinations nevertheless forced Kan-E-Senna and other leaders to send their armies unto Baelsar's Wall and secure it, an act which will be considered offensive by the Garleans. To have some chances against Viceroy, Alliance plans to unite with Ala Mhigan Resistance forces and strike as one. This plan, however, failed and the Resistance was crushed by imperial forces under Zenos himself, who confronted Warrior of Light and defeated them (but spared their life so they can clash again in future). Scions proposed a new plan - divide Legatus' attention to two fronts - Ala Mhigo and Doma, so Resistance and Alliance might concieve a new strategy.

Later, Kan-E-Senna, together with other Eorzean leaders participated in the siege of Ala Mhigo and battle within city walls which ensued. After Zenos' defeat and Ala Mhigo at last free from the empire, Order of the Twin Adder's forces were put on watch of the city, while Elder Seedseer returned to Gridania.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers[]

Kan-E-Senna attended the Eorzean Alliance meetings in Ala Mhigo, offering the insights of Gridania and their information against the Empire. She reported sightings of mysterious towers throughout the Black Shroud to Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn not long after the discovery of similar structures in La Noscea.

She asked Alphinaud's advice regarding establishing a specific force that could combat those in service to Garlemald and the rogue Ascian Fandaniel, reflecting on his time leading the Crystal Braves. Kan-E-Senna welcomed the Ixal and Sylphs to the table of the Eorzean Alliance, newly renamed as the Grand Company of Eorzea at the suggestion of the Warrior of Light and Alphinaud now that it encompassed all Eorzean groups.

Upon Fourchenault Leveilleur's arrival to Gridania, she hosted him and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in the Lotus Stands. She expressed gratitude towards the late Louisoix for his actions at Carteneau many years ago in protecting Eorzea and all of the world. Fourchenault agreed with her sentiment regarding his father, but admitted he disagreed with his actions, believing that Louisoix had defied the Sharlayan philosophy of merely charting history, never interfering with its course. Kan-E-Senna asked if Sharlayan would offer assistance against the oncoming Final Days, but Fourchenault declined. After a heated exchange between father and children, Fourchenault disowned Alphinaud and Alisaie and left, as Kan-E-Senna apologized for the incident to the twins.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

The word of the Scions' victory within the Tower of Zot set the Grand Company of Eorzea and Far Eastern Alliance to form the Ilsabard Contingent. The Scions met with Kan-E-Senna, Admiral Merlwyb, and Sultana Nanamo in Limsa Lominsa, where they briefed them about the contingent whose purpose was not to invade Garlemald, but engage the Telophoroi and provide assistance to any untempered Garleans. Though there were still many within the Grand Company unwilling to assist Garleans in any way, Kan-E-Senna believed that with the Scions at the helm, many more would be persuaded to join.

After Zodiark's destruction and the return of the Final Days, reports about blasphemies started to pour in from all over the world. One such blasphemy had been spotted in Gridania. Kan-E-Senna was duty-bound to lead the hunt for it, but the Warrior of Light also enlisted after hearing about it from a Gridanian delegate at Radz-at-Han. The Warrior met with Kan-E-Senna's personal Keeper who briefed them. The blasphemy, which had been named Gleipnir, infected people with its claws whose symptoms resembled a plague that had terrorized the Twelveswood years ago. A cure was found then, and Kan-E-Senna believed Gleipnir could bring the terrible plague back. She attempted to heal an infected person with the previously discovered cure, but he succumbed, making her realize that while the symptoms were the same, this plague was new and different and much worse.

Many within Twelveswood started panicking and began to blame the Elder Seedseer for inaction, who met with them to reassure them. With what the Warrior of Light had witnessed in Thavnair, Kan-E-Senna learned the Final Days caused ordinary people to transform into beasts through fear and despair. One person infected by Gleipnir transformed through sheer terror. The Warrior and Kan-E-Senna put the beast down, and Kan-E-Senna told others to stay in their homes and not to give in to fear and despair. Acting on her sister's, Raya-O-Senna's, suggestion, she resolved to make contact with the elementals, thinking they would need all the help they could get.

Kan-E-Senna asked the Warrior and her Keeper to accompany her to the Guardian Tree so that she could commune with the elementals. The elementals reacted defensively, causing her pain. Gleipnir appeared and knocked her out but she avoided its claws. The Warrior stood ground, and through the Echo, witnessed a moment from Kan-E-Senna's childhood. Afterward, Gleipnir had vanished. The Warrior told Kan-E-Senna what they saw, and she determined that Gleipnir was her long lost friend Ea-Sura, a student at the same time as her who disappeared after an incident and never made any further contact with her. Apparently, he had remained within the Twelveswood as a silent guardian but the burden in his heart had been too much for him to bear and he had turned into the blasphemy. Kan-E-Senna was taken to the Conjurer's guild to be treated.

Kan-E-Senna attempted to get back into the hunt, but E-Sumi-Yan forbid her. She tasked the Warrior and Keeper to provide offerings to the forest to appease the elementals, so that they would be persuaded to help. Getting aid from the people they had helped during this crisis, the offerings were a success. After Kan-E-Senna recovered enough, she returned to the Guardian Tree to commune with the elementals, supported by the Warrior and the people of the forest. This time the elementals were receptive and communed through her. Afterward, they all took a respite before engaging Ea-Sura directly.

Since Ea-Sura's main target was Kan-E-Senna herself, she, the Warrior, and Keeper prepared to meet him at the Guardian Tree. Kan-E-Senna attempted to reach out to him and then with the elementals, providing a blessing to the forest that should weaken Ea-Sura enough. The plan went into motion, and after a hard battle, Kan-E-Senna's conjuring succeeded and the Warrior struck down the blasphemy. This victory restored hope to the people of Gridania. In their final meeting, Kan-E-Senna revealed to the Warrior how she longed to leave the forest and go on an adventure like they had, but because of Ea-Sura, she now knew her duty to Gridania was more important. Nevertheless, she kept the thought about adventure alive.

Kan-E-Senna later received word of the Scions' efforts in Sharlayan about completing the Forum's ark in case of the worst-case scenario of the the Final Days destroying their world. Hearing that adamantine was required, the same material that had bound the primal Bahamut in Dalamud, Kan-E-Senna and her siblings gathered capable individuals to search for the material scattered across the land and to bring it to their allies. Succeeding, the Scions used the ship, the Ragnarok, to travel to the Final Days' origin point and defeat the Endsinger.

And we for our part are glad indeed to be able to welcome friends both old and new...

Kan-E-Senna's voice from the past

Kan-E-Senna's voice is one of the many memories of the Warrior of Light's comrades who encourage them in Ultima Thule to walk forward and face the end. Afterward, Kan-E-Senna witnessed the Scions' triumphant return in saving the world once more.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Kan-E-Senna Portrait

Kan-E-Senna's portrait from A Realm Reborn.

Kan-E-Senna is a Padjal woman in a long white dress with a fur collar. She has long blonde hair that she keeps in a woven bun above her shoulders, braided to create a soft shaped circle. Her eyes are green, and she carries a staff unique to her, the Claustrum, which is a Conjurer's arm crafted out of a blue crystal. She has several leather hand straps around her wrists and fingers, and she wears white wool boots.

Like all Padjal, she has thin horns protruding from her head, which she keeps behind the leaf-shaped circlet that all Seedseers wear.

Personality[]

No road is closed to those true of heart.

Kan-E-Senna

Kan-E-Senna is calm and composed, seldom showing unease. A kindhearted soul, she is considerate toward those around her, and most anyone that she feels deserving of her respect. She's virtuous, generous, and selfless, willing to show mercy even to her enemies; she saved countless lives in the aftermath of the Battle of Carteneau using her healing capabilities as a White Mage.

She has a penchant for deviating from the norm: despite her political importance as a leader, she is unafraid of entering dangerous environs and nurturing foreign relations with Gridania. She is often the first in the Eorzean Alliance to propose—and support—reforms and new courses of action. The other Alliance leaders and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn respect her for her wisdom, knowledge, and leadership, often having her as the de facto spokesperson for the Alliance.

The Elder Seedseer has a sentimental side, and she is not above looking up to people, including Archon Louisoix Leveilleur. Occasionally, she will offer him a silent prayer, hoping that she has done his legacy proud.

It is hinted in the Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker tank role-quests that in her heart Kan-E-Senna longs to leave the Twelveswood and go on an adventure. She nonetheless understands her duty to Gridania takes precedence, but this does not quiet her adventurous side.

Behind the scenes[]

Kan-E-Senna was developed for the Seventh Umbral Era storyline, as well as to give Gridania a "city leader" type of character for players to interact with and rally around. She appears substantially in A Realm Reborn. While her concept art, which was still used in a few promotional materials for late Legacy patches, shows her with coppery hair (the same as her siblings), in-game her hair is bright blonde.

Her weapon, the Claustrum, is also the Relic staff in Final Fantasy XI. In Eorzea's lore, the Claustrum was lent to General Osbern during the Battle of Firesand Banks, a critical point in the Autumn War between Gridania and Ala Mhigo. The staff was taken after Osbern's defeat, and remained in Ala Mhigan hands for a time.

Voice[]

Kan-E-Senna was voiced by Cindy Robinson in the English version. She shared her voice actor with Einheria from Bravely Default. Starting in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, she is voiced by Hannah Arterton.

She is voiced by Rie Tanaka in the Japanese version. She shares her voice actor with Garuda from Final Fantasy XIV and Emina Hanaharu from Final Fantasy Type-0.
